On the subject of style copying from another artist: once or twice is flattering, any more after that it would be a courtesy to mention the original artist otherwise it starts becoming awkward for people who can see where the influence stemmed from.

Thoughts?

shouldn't you be working, why yes

Perhaps a section/post where the artist talks about influences and inspiration for techniques and styles that they've been using, whether it be peers or just periods of art. If they've incorporated another artist's style into their own, then a mention for every single piece down might be a bit much ^^ Though it probably depends on the situation...

That is a great suggestion, indeed a section discussing influences is a good idea because as artists we are always influenced not by just one source but several, and to see what another artists' favourites are is a good way to discover new influences yourself. Hmm it's been a while since I've done that myself, I'll do my own personal influences post soon.

For sure, not every piece needs to have a mention, just once is enough. :) What pisses me off is when people don't do it at all.

agree!
Because otherwise it's just sort of... ehhh.

And it's not like people familiar with both sources wouldn't be able to tell, I think.

A situation like that makes it rather awkward indeed, yeah. D:

Being influenced by styles isn't the issue, like say taking a bit of this and a bit of that, doing studies, analysing what you like about that artist's work, and still putting your own flair into it, that's cool. It's when one settles into copying/replicating what is obviously a single person's modus operandi in style and ideas without acknowledging the original source or making it clear that it is a homage, that's when it starts looking like bad form which was what I meant in the OP. :)

I agree with you. I think it's fine when people are like "HEY LOOK THIS LOOKS LIKE XXX'S STUFF COS IM TRYING IT OUT TO SEE HOW IT WORKS" because it's shameless and open-minded and they're hiding nothing... but when people do it, do it, and do it again without once mentioning said artist's name, it becomes really awkward for both the viewer and the original artist I think X_X;

I speak of course from personal experience but often I tell myself people who imitate thoroughly will find someone else to be infatuated with and forget about me sooner or later.

It irritates me the most when the copier-artist gets compliments on certain aspects of the work that's been lifted and they happily accept the praise. It's so catty of me but I just get all red-eyed when that happens fnfnghfnghhfnn

Yeah, you're spot on there lawny. It'd be cool if people could be more open with this sort of thing, haih.
