Have been reading a fair bit of fan fic over the holiday break and I have a few new year wishes. They mainly apply to QAF fan fic, but the principles (get names right, etc.) apply across all fandoms. Some I have whinged about before, but my tolerance level for this stuff is low and I keep seeing these things everywhere so I feel like having a bit

I have a problem with the words who and that. I really dislike it when the wrong word is used.

Me too. It's basically reducing a person to an object. I have a very real issue with it.

a mish mash of good ideas and bad writing with the bad sometimes so distracting that the work becomes unreadable.As a teacher, I feel the same about my students : they simply don't know anymore how to write using the passé simple (preterit), how to write complex sentences ! They keep doing the same mistakes again and again and again... I'm like a desperate parrot looking for a new song to sing !

I know just how you must feel. At one time I considered a career in teaching, but I figured it would kill my own love of English and literature if I had to keep force-feeding it to kids who couldn't be less interested.
