[Scene] Attorney's Last Words...!

Phoenix: ((wtf))
Phoenix: ((dead to me))

Phoenix: *Phoenix paces restlessly back and forth in Defense Lobby No. 2. The trial of Zak Gramarye has ended, and the chaos that followed is only starting to abate as the bailiffs realize they have to abandon their search for the missing defendant. Having already been questioned, Phoenix is left alone. Eventually he's the only one left in the room*

Phoenix: *he has less than an hour before the start of the hearing, but when he tries to think of what he's going to do or say, everything just mushes together. After much hesitating and lip chewing he finally pulls out his phone and dials Edgeworth's number*

Edgeworth: *he's seated on a couch, calmly finishing a cup of tea when his cell phone rings in his jacket. Instead of picking it up immediately, Edgeworth glances at his pocketwatch, frowns, lets the phone ring two times more... and then finally picks it up in his usual curt tone* Edgeworth speaking.

Phoenix: Edgeworth! *sighs in relief* Thank God you answered. Where are you? Can you come down to the courthouse?

Edgeworth: Wright? *raises an eyebrow* Now really isn't the time for one of your hairbrained adventures. I'm busy. *takes another sip of tea*

Phoenix: Edgeworth, I'm serious. I'm... *Runs a hand over his hair anxiously* Listen, I know I've probably used up my half of the favor bank by now, but I really need your help on this one.

Edgeworth: *sighs, still unshakably calm* You have two minutes--that's it. And if the resultant answer is "the witness did it," so help me...

Phoenix: *knowing that Edgeworth probably is being literal, Phoenix starts speaking in a rush* It wasn't the witness, it was the prosecutor! He set me up--he's telling everyone I cheated but I didn't and I need you to come down to the courthouse and tell them that.

Edgeworth: *sets down his teacup, somewhat caught off guard by the rush of words* Tell them... what? That you didn't cheat the prosecutor out of a win? The devil does it matter what he says?

Phoenix: He has evidence, all right! *Phoenix grimaces--he hadn't wanted to admit it, even though he knew it would come out eventually* I...I screwed up, okay? I did something I shouldn't, and now they're like calling down every defense attorney in the city or something. Gavin's going to tell them I forged evidence and I have nothing to prove I didn't.

Edgeworth: *rises to his feet, the teacup he'd set down at the armrest clattering terribly* You what? He has evidence-- you presented illegal evidence, in court?!

Phoenix: It's more complicated than that, all right? *rubs his eyes, frustrated* I have to go back into court in less than an hour. Can you come? I'll explain everything in person, I promise.

Edgeworth: *grimaces, reaching up to his temple to rub it* Wright... I am at the courthouse.

Phoenix: You...what? *glances behind him as if there's a chance Edgeworth is actually in the same room as him* Where? What have you been doing--didn't you hear the cops tearing this place apart!?

Edgeworth: ...A detective looked in here ten minutes back. I sent him out. *tersely* I was in the courtroom up until half an hour ago, Wright. And we reconvene in one.

Phoenix: Oh... *crestfallen* Right, you have a trial today, too... *chuckles weakly* Think you can finish in three minutes...?

Edgeworth: ......... I'll try for twenty, but I can't guarantee it. It's a delicate case. *quietly* It's a disbarment hearing, isn't it?

Phoenix: *slumps onto the lobby sofa.* ...Yeah. I don't know what to tell them. *takes a deep breath, and when he lets it out he somehow feels a little better.* Don't worry about me--I'll think of something. You need to focus on your own case, and I... I just needed to talk to someone. I'll be all right. *forces another weak chuckle* You know me.

Edgeworth: *scowls at the courtroom doors in front of him, as if they could produce a satisfactory solution* Just tell them the truth, and it'll be sufficient. *hesitates* Wright... I'll be there, alright? Before it ends.

Phoenix: *though he was just in the process of telling himself he doesn't need Edgeworth there, he relaxes with profound relief.* Thanks, Edgeworth. I'll tell you everything later, okay? Sorry to put you on the spot like this.

Edgeworth: It's alright. *grabs his briefcase and heads briskly over to the bailiff, who opens up one of the courtroom doors* ...I'm going now. See you. *click*

Phoenix: *Phoenix lowers the phone, and hangs up a moment later.* Yeah... *with another deep breath he goes back to his notes to try and prepare for the upcoming hearing*

disbarment, miles edgeworth, scene
