Man I hate to say this but that sounds like what happened to me when my harddrive fragmented.

From the sounds of it, I guess stuff on my harddrive is probably unrecoverable huh.

Actually no! I took it in to the genius bar and they defragged it for me with... some complicated trick involving an external HD and some backup programs, and luckily nothing was irretrievable. IF that's the problem I can't promise it'll go as smoothly for you, but just because it can't start itself up doesn't mean other data's not still there. Maybe?

I'm actually kind of glad they were able to do something for you on the spot. I've never taken anything into the Genius Bar and I was afraid they generally needed to send it back to the factory for a couple of days or something.
