Okay, should be doing homework, but I'm PMSing and can't get anything done. So, I'm instead going to do something fun. Like rant about two certain Tsukihime characters.

Curry+ass = shit. Ciel likes curry, is associated most with curry, and thus Ciel+ass = shit.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of fans about her floating around, and are quite vocal about it too. And they decry the main reason behind her lesser popularity in the Japanese fandom, which is that she's not a virgin and thus a "slut". Failing to take into account the fact that Kohaku is the bigger "slut", and yet ranks higher than even her sister in said fandom.

So why the difference in treatment? If you think about it, both Ciel and Kohaku have a lot of similarities. False personas, manipulation, chestmaster, terrible pasts......

The difference is subtlety. Ciel, when you first meet her, you know there's some kind of agenda. Hell, even Shiki notices there's something off, and she has to use hypnosis to make him buy her story. That's just a huge tip-off there. For a secret agent, she comes off too obvious.

Not the case for Kohaku. When you first meet her, you just think "Oh, one of the maids." No obnoxious arrow pointing at her saying "BTW I'LL KILL YOUR FAMILY ^^." And throughout the game, she keeps up her normal facade except for a few subtle hints. The first one being her watching TV with Shiki, as she continually smiles even when discussing the latest murders. A tad creepy, but you forget it as you progress through the game. She only starts becoming obvious in Hisui's route, but only if you are an observant gamer.

And, she accomplishes her plans without any hypnosis or superstrength like Ciel. Just skillful word craft, and her medical knowledge. Point goes to the Badass Normal.

Granted, Kohaku's popularity in the first year or two did suffer as much as Ciel's, getting 4th and 5th place respectively in the first two popularity polls. Much of it thanks to the whole "slut" thing. Then Kagetsu Toya came out which introduced her nutty antics, not the least being Magical Amber, which pushed her to number 3. Then Melty Blood came along and....yeah. She's practically an icon.

Meanwhile, Ciel just did the same boring old curry and Tenchi catfight jokes, whittling away her popularity to number 6. Which jumped back up to 4 in Melty Blood, if only because she was kept more as a side character, and the general sympathy points.
