The GazettE: PlayStation Theater

The GazettE

Date: 4.29.16
Location: PlayStation Theater. New York, New York.

I arrived at the PlayStation Theater around 1:00 bracing myself for a long wait with only my notebook for entertainment. I’m so used to New Yorkers being downright nasty that I automatically assumed I’d be surrounded by rude people. Thankfully I was wrong! I met some wonderful people and one duo in front of me was playing music while we waited. The North American Street Team leaders came by with a decorated flag for everyone to sign. The wait was quite long as I’d known/anticipated but the company made it better.

VIP was supposed to enter at 5:30 but because the staff at the PlayStation Theater are completely incompetent (not to mention downright rude) I didn’t get inside until past 6:30. Staff checked tickets and IDs, VIP getting a blue carnival wristband while Heresy members got a red and black rubber wristband. One of Ruki’s designs I presume.

Once VIP fans were FINALLY inside, there was another line to get our VIP shirts. Got mine then went to the goods. The staff had managed to misplace the boxes containing CDs, tote bags, and key chains so all that was available was t-shirts, hoodies, and bandanas. I bought a t-shirt and the Dogmatic Trois t-shirt then got in line to enter the venue proper. Managed to get third row in front of Ruki’s platform.

Cue excited screams and a rush forward as the opening notes of Nihil started playing and the boys took the stage. They were in their Undying outfits and I was spellbound by how gorgeous they all are in person. Ruki had his neck marks painted on and miraculously kept his hat on for the entire live. He took his position on the platform and said “We are GazettE” then asked if we were ready. We all screamed yes and then they started playing Dogma. Ruki was on the platform a lot looking down at the fans or he’d wander to Uruha or Aoi’s side of the stage and switch spots with them.

Dogma was next and this song was so incredible live.

We sang along to parts of Vortex and that was fun.

Couldn’t always see everyone but Kai was smiling whenever I caught a glimpse of him so I assume he never stopped beaming.

Uruha, Reita, Aoi, and Ruki wandered often and took turns being up on Ruki’s platform. Reita looked kind of psychotic with his one visible eye and bright contact. I don’t know how that man breathes on stage.

At one point Ruki pushed his sleeves up to his elbows giving fans a good view of his forearms. I swear his tattoos are different in every picture he posts so I don’t know if these are real or temporary, but on one arm he had the roman numeral IV with other numbers around it and the other he had some writing on his arm but I couldn’t tell what it was. He glided his tongue up his finger and trialed it up his forearm then was tapping it against his skin.

Earlier I’d told the Ruki fan next to me that Ruki had very sensually licked his thurible in Toronot. She laughed and said “He licks everything” which is very true.

I tried really hard to know what was being played but I was so hot and preoccupied with trying to keep my balance and my spot that titles failed me. Didn’t recognize every song but they played amazing ones.

The promised thurible porn scene came and oh my god. Ruki slowly ran his tongue up either side of it then cradled it to his chest like a lover. Before dropping it with a clunk.

Sometimes he’d speak between songs. “You’re crazy” or tell us to jump. To shout. To go crazy. He’d announce song titles too though I couldn’t always catch them. He actually did very well with his English!

Ruki sometimes sprayed us with water which felt amazing.

At one point we (in a very fail way) sang along with him and he pushed his lips together in that “Eh” pose that had the girl next to me giggling and saying “Look at his face!”

I remember singing along during Ominous as I actually knew some of the words.

All too soon Ruki was announcing “last song” and then they launched into Filth in the Beauty. The fans were singing along or trying to. I only know bits of lyrics of this song but I didn’t want it to end!

They threw some picks then left the stage. Fans were immediately calling for them to come back, switching from the Japanese live chant of “アンコレ” and “ガゼット” and then in English “encore” and “The GazettE”. At last they came back. Ruki had the flag we’d signed wrapped his shoulders like a cape. He took it off and held it open so we could see all our signatures and smiled then set it aside. Ruki and Reita were the only ones to keep their costumes on while Aoi, Uruha, and Kai were wearing tour t-shirts. Uruha had cut the sleeves off his to make it a tank top.

Ruki thanked us and they launched into their first song.

Aoi and Uruha were standing on the platform together at one point and playing together while Uruha was head banging.

More glorious water spraying.

All too soon it was the end of an amazing live. While the other four were assembling to take each other’s hands and bow, Aoi was off to the side so Reita had to get his attention and wave him over. Aoi rushed over to take his hand then they bowed deeply and thanked us. They separated to throw picks then Reita wrapped his arm around Ruki and leaned in to say something to him that made him laugh. Probably talking about the crazy Americans.

Kai threw out drumsticks next and was all smiles. It was sad and surreal to see them leaving the stage and having no idea when I’ll see them again. I’ve been their fan since I was sixteen (not always actively) but I finally got to see them live. I was sweat soaked, footstore, and extremely thirsty but it was worth every minute and every dollar I paid.

VIP headed to the back to sit and wait for the meet and greet. Individual rows were called, staff was as rude as expected, but soon enough I was standing in front of Aoi shaking his hand and trying not to get tongue tied. I was worried that seeing this gorgeous man in front of me and holding my hand would collapse my brain until I could only blurt out “You’re pretty” but thankfully that wasn’t the case. Each member said “Thank you” in English. I thanked Aoi and told him I’d stayed in Mie-ken with my cousin for two weeks. He smiled and said “Really?” I asked if he knew Shiroko and he said he did. Reluctantly I let go of his hand and moved on to Reita. I thanked him for coming to New York. Ruki… I told Ruki that thanks to him I started studying Japanese. He smiled and complimented my Japanese. (I was most worried that I would completely fail in front of the reason I learned this language at all!) I’d planned to tell Kai how beautiful his smile was, had practiced the line in my head over and over, but having him smiling and shaking my hand finished my off so instead I thanked him. Uruha smiled as he thanked me and he was so beautiful. I wish I could’ve said more to him and Kai but they all seem like they want to come back so hopefully there will be a next time.

Tried the goods table and of course the goods that the idiot staff discovered during the live had all sold out by the time I got to the table. I’d really hoped to get a keychain and bag but it wasn’t to be. I’ll have to buy their single on iTunes instead to support them.

All in all, it was an amazing live and I hope to see them again soon. I hope everyone else enjoys their own experience with the GazettE! I made a bunch of new friends at the concert and so many wonderful memories.
