Hello writers! I'm wondering how the writing is going for everyone? This time of year seems to bring a lull in fic, as evidenced in BSG Fandom by a Wireless with one fic ( Read more... )

I've spent much of my free time in the last week watching Hustle, a BBC show about grifters that I am watching as research for my novel (and as pleasure, it turns out). There's only one character that feels similar to my heroine, a man, but some of his attitudes seem to compliment my thoughts about my heroine's backstory. There is a female character, but she's a little bland and too refined in comparison to Kitt, so I'm not feeling her as much as an inspiration. I have five pages of notes from the show, and while it has a decidedly different grifting/conning flavor than my novel, it has been very helpful. People seem fascinated by the BIG CONS and the elegance of their participants. My heroine lives a decidedly double-life with elegance on the outside (barely) and a bit of yuk underneath. That isn't quite the case with the show ( ... )

Glad you're enjoying Hustle. The characters are pretty slick, but it's one of the few fictional portrayals of the con without moralizing.

And YAY plot! Plot is important, more important than I'd like sometimes. hee.

I think it's good to have a couple of big ideas in reserve. Just in case. :D

I do like the lack of moralizing and the code of the con - that's pretty fun to see. I expect to use both the short and long con, Kitt is definitely a short con girl and another character she'll interact with is a long con artist. It's definitely helped to watch and get involved more into the world of grifters. I never thought I'd be writing them! So interesting where life takes you, right?

That's great that the research has been going well! I never thought of looking at other fictional sources as research (but I don't think there are any other fictional sources that resemble my story).

I'm in an editing/rewriting cycle. (Thanks H!) Nice because been really busy and edits are easier to make on the fly. I'm also adding more then I'm cutting so my word count is staying up. And damn you all for making me think about that so much. :P But I am nearing 65k which is cool.

I need to be working on my pilots present. I have a great idea I just need time to write when I'm not distracted by my mystery. :D

That's a good editing cycle if you're adding stuff!

Good luck with pilots_presents. I need to get on that too.

I really don't mind cutting things if I feel like it's making the story better, but it can still be really disheartening. Right now, I'm fleshing out descriptions as much as anything else so if nothing else I break even.

I have a story I'm excited about the PP, I just need time. If I could just add one more hour. ;)

My original fic's on the backburner right now because I have a few fic assignments. I want to get something in for the Porn Battle, which closes on Wednesday, I have pilots_presents (I haven't gotten to much with that yet) and werewolfbigbang which is a TON of fun.

Really, I should at least grab the new first scene (which I posted on my journal ages ago) and fix that.

I'm going through an unfortunate spurt of non-motivation where I just decide to watch Sons of Anarchy instead of be productive. I should be using episodes as rewards for X amount of words or something.

A warewolfbigbang makes me giggle, in a good way. I'm glad you're having fun with it. :D

I am a big fan of bribery. Although usually I use writing as a bribe for doing house work. hee.

It is very silly. It's Bill and Saul as young newlyweds where Bill is a werewolf and has not yet told Saul. :)

I've had the frustrating problem of knowing what happens next, but not having the time or ability to focus to keep it moving forward. I managed to write around 900 words this week, but I'm still only about halfway through chapter 2 in what I've outlined as at least 11 chapters. Whine-y, self-important rant to follow ( ... )

*hugs*

Don't feel bad about venting. Everyone has limitations on their time and energy. I stay home and most of the time I'd argue that it doesn't really give me more time just less money. *shrug*

I will say that I have learned over the last couple of months that it's ok to say, particularly to Paul, that I need time to write. Even if that means that something doesn't get done around the house or he needs to leave me alone a few nights a week. It makes me a better person.

Kids are harder, but I'm writing while we Good Luck, Charlie so keep that in mind. I'm also not getting that much done. hee.

I actually kind of like Good Luck, Charlie which may not say the most positive things about my childhood. The mother reminds of my mother in a sit-com kind of way and she dances better. hee. Dog with a Blog isn't great but I'm pretty sure it's better than Two Broke Girls and the high school on Shake it Up is John Hughes High which earns it a lot of points.

Ant Farm, however, makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Like, a lot.

Re: Why yes, I WILL take a side of edits with that. plaid_slytherin January 26 2013, 21:49:38 UTC
Good luck with the promotions! It may not be fun but it means you're on the way there, which is many steps ahead of me. :D

Jsyk, I am REALLY enjoying Ctrl Z. Sometimes it's a challenge to edit because I find myself so invested in the story, which I think is a great problem to have. :D
