Describing a Book

I need to read the article, but before I get there, I'll admit that I tend to think of genre as very secondary. I have a story to tell and the genre is the tool I'm using to tell it. I see no point in apologizing for using the tool that worked best for me.

That said, I totally apologize when my writing is dark (see: Oblong - I've only recently decided to label it's genre as "Dark Fiction" so that I don't have insert a lengthy apology for the creep factor).

I think this is a really interesting and great way to look at genre. To a certain extent I do the same thing, particularly the potential use of speculative fiction or fantasy to craft a world that fits my plot without having to get into real world politics. Part of it is easier, but I can also streamline conflicts and create different difference between people societies, one of the great strengths of sci-fi in general.
