Authors Notes:  Well, after another long stint of lurking and writing things that will never see the light of day, I have found another pairing that has made me want to write and actually post things.  So I’ve plotted out a 10-part Sterek series that sees them through 10 different ‘Firsts’ in their relationship, starting with the first date and moving forward, spanning about a decade.  I hope you like it!

Derek showing up on evenings when Stiles’ dad was working was not a regular occurrence, but it was also not unusual, so Stiles was not concerned when he came back from the bathroom one night to find Derek in his living room.

“Hey man, new crisis?”

Derek shook his head ‘no’, so Stiles sat on the other end of the couch and tuned back into the show he was watching as it returned from commercials.  Derek watched with him in the companionable silence they had developed over the last year since Scott was bitten.  After dealing with Peter, the Kanima, and the Alpha pack, the Hale pack had settled into as normal a life as a pack of werewolves and humans could.  Now, Peter had gone away to make his own pack, far away from Beacon Hills, Jackson was a werewolf and no longer the Kanima, Scott had finally joined the pack, and the Alphas had been warded off of the Hale pack’s territory.  Stiles, Scott, Lydia, Jackson, Danny, Isaac, Erica and Boyd were more than half way through their Junior year and life was pretty good from where Stiles was standing.  After the show ended, Derek shifted and looked at Stiles.

“Do you want to go to dinner?”

Stiles was happy to take any excuse not to cook, so he leapt at the idea and the pair were soon sitting in Derek’s Camaro, heading to a small family-owned diner that Derek liked to frequent as it was quiet but still had decent food.

Stiles rambled amiably on the ride: about classes, lacrosse, and Scott’s latest antics.  Derek replied when necessary, but was happy to let Stiles do most of the talking.  Once they entered the diner it go quiet though, and Derek sniffed subtly at Stiles to get an idea of what had ceased the usually non-stop narrative.

The waitress came and took their drink orders, and left the pair to look over their menus and still Stiles was quiet, seemingly lost in thought.

“Stop smelling me” he finally muttered, a wry smile on his face.

“Sorry, habit.  Something’s wrong”

“Not really”

Derek fixed him with a pointed look.

“You stopped talking - something’s wrong”

“I used to come here with my mom...you know - before.  Every Sunday we would let my dad sleep in and we would sneak out for breakfast.  We would talk for hours - she talked like I do - and fill each other in on our week.  I was just remembering.  The last time I was here was with her”

That had not been what Derek was expecting, and he took a moment to formulate his reply.

“We can go somewhere else” he finally offers in a voice as equally quiet as the one that Stiles was speaking with.

“No, I’m good” Stiles shyly made eye-contact.  “They’re good memories; it just hit me hard, like taking a werewolf to the chest or something.  But really, I’d like to stay.  Unless it creeps you out that I used to come here with her, in which case-”

“Just read the menu Stiles.  I’m hungry” Derek’s not-quite smile took the sting out of the abrupt interruption and Stiles beamed back at him.

After ordering, Stiles started to chatter on about the pros and cons of breakfast for dinner vs. the classic diner burger.  Stiles stopped in shock though, when he actually startled a laugh out of Derek.  He raised his hands in victory, and was about to get up and do a victory lap when the food came.  Derek sighed with relief, gracing Stiles with a smaller, but no less genuine smile this time.  In between bites of his burger, Stiles looked up at Derek.

“You should do that more often”

At Derek’s confused look he elaborated.

“Smile, laugh; I mean don’t get me wrong, the tall, dark and broody thing works too, but I like it when you smile”

Stiles seemed to realize what he had said, and went back to his food with gusto, ignoring the blush staining his cheeks.

“My sister Laura used to make me laugh all the time”

Derek offered quietly, and he and Stiles make eye-contact once more before both going back to their food.  Stiles seemed deep in thought once again, and Derek waited patiently until he spoke.

“This is a date”

“I-yes, this is a date”

“Does that mean I shouldn’t order dessert?”

The corner of Derek’s lip twitched like he was suppressing another smile, but Stiles looked so genuinely concerned and serious that Derek answered in like-tones.

“You can order dessert”

Stiles’ face lit up as he polished off his fries and pulled the dessert menu closer to see if they still had his favorite brownie sundae.

“Yes!”  He turned the menu to Derek and showed him the picture “This is the most delicious creation in existence.  We’re having it”

Derek nodded and signaled the waitress, who promised it would be up in a few minutes.

“Wait, we’re on a date” Stiles repeated suddenly, his eyes widening as the words sunk in.  “Like a real date?”

“That was the idea”

“Why?”

“I was hungry”

Stiles flailed a little, trying to convey that Derek was being a jerk and purposely not answering his question, but mostly just almost knocked his water over.

“No, but why me?”

Derek sighed “Are you really going to make me spell it out Stiles?”

“Yes!  I don’t get it.  You could have anyone, like ever, and you want to take me on a date?”

“Stiles, according to the rest of the pack, we’ve been together for the last six months, if not longer.  To them this is just making it ‘official’.  Without sounding too crass, I know you’re attracted to me, and I am to you as well.  We...we make a good team” he says, almost begrudgingly.  “Stiles, the wolf sees you as a potential mate, a partner.  But we mate for life so-”

“I’m in”

Derek looked taken aback, not expecting Stiles to respond quite so quickly, but Stiles waved him off and continued.

“Duh, of course I’m in.  I mean it’s crazy that you” he gestured vaguely to encompass Derek’s whole body “would want me” he then flailed in his own direction to indicate himself “but if that’s what happened then I’m in, 100%.  You said once that werewolves didn’t always find people who the wolf recognized as a potential mate, right?”

Derek nodded, his jaw suddenly tensed, as he didn’t know where Stiles was going with his monologue.

“Right, so that means that your wolf finding me as a potential mate is pretty rare, and if we didn’t get together then you may not find another person who the wolf finds compatible and you’d have to settle for someone who the wolf tolerates instead of who the wolf likes too.  And you” again he flailed in Derek’s general direction “you are so not the type of person who ever should have to settle.  I am going to be outrageously insecure about this, and you’re probably going to wish you never offered, but I’m in and there’s nothing you can do about it now”

Derek was about to reply when the waitress brought out a decadently large bowl heaping with brownies, ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry, with two spoons.  Stiles held his hand up to stop Derek from talking, then reached down and passed him one of the spoons.  Derek took the spoon and followed Stiles lead as the younger man loaded the ooey, gooey confection onto his own utensil and took a bite, moaning to the point of obscenity.  Derek’s reaction was a little more subtle, but he had to admit that it was delicious.

Derek was about to try and speak again when Stiles simply reached across the table with his free hand and clasped Derek’s, holding it gently.  Derek met Stiles’ eyes and tightened the grip before going back to the dessert.  Stiles grinned and did the same.
