DC Comics took a huge leap for these series (and Neil Gaiman's concept). It is said that The Sandman stories are a refreshing change from the usual superhero comic books out there. Not to mention it is very intellectual and makes use of a lot of mythologies and philosophical allegories all throughout (well, The Endless are personifications of human thought and feelings and Gaiman played out the belief that humanity are "God-creators").
