TALES OF THE MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

That's fascinating and yes I would love to read more!

Is the lowering the body temperature thing the same thing that helps little kids survive icy drownings with Mammalian Dive Reflex?

Yes, exactly! Except this is a controlled environment, of course, and you should never allow a human's body temperature to drop below 90 deg F at the risk of causing an arrhythmia, increasing clot formation, and causing electrolyte imbalances (these can even happen during the protocol so patients have to be closely monitored). Obviously, you can't control body temp during a drowning, but that's why many people (especially kids) can survive if they're rescued quickly enough. But then there's that whole water in the lungs issue... ;)

It's really fascinating physiology and it's amazing how the human body responds in critical situations. We really are remarkable creatures. :D

Thanks for reading and I'm glad you liked it!
