Good list! I find that teh font should be at least 40...I try for 48! Since I don't use many words, it helps.
I like putting a darker border around my pics. It helps them pop.
About dimming. That depends on how bright your bulb is and how bright the lights are around the screen. I dim half the time and the results are much better.
I use my first slide to thank the school for inviting me.
While I agree to limit the fancy stuff, one once in a while can be a good thing. (Depending the pic/effect you want to make.
My pics are the colorful things. I stick to mostly black font. Sometimes a dark blue or red for a few words.
If each slideonly had one pic, it would be a long slide show. I vary mine BUT I make sure by tral and error that they can all be seen. I do show my favorite books and I have about 7 on that page. Easily seen. Most times, I stick to 1-3 pics per slide.
Again, whatever works for you. Lots of trial and error! Also- a big one!
I "saturated" my pics so the colors aren't washed out. Helped a lot!
