Pairing: Adam/Kris
Rating: PG-13
snugglebunee ,for the charity auction. (Some things changed without my consent though...This is a teensy bit longer than 2,000 words, and well, Alli just demanded to be included. XD) Thank you so much for being patient with me, and I hope you like it!
Beta: Let's all give a warm welcome to my new beta empath89 !!! Woot!! =D And good luck to you as well, as I've alredy been through a nice handful of betas who either got too busy, or too fed up with me. lol. So good luck, and thank you!!
Disclamer: Unfortunately, I do not own Kris, Adam, or anyone else in this story. Nor do I own any of the songs, or anything recognizable from American Idol or Ford. I barely own the plotline, as its based on the show. Adam and Kris belong completely to themselves, and each other.

“He’s a loser anyways,” Adam said, hugging a sobbing Allison against his chest. “You deserve better than some guy who’ll just cheat on you anyway.”

“No, I don’t,” Ali sobbed, clutching his shirt harder. “I we-went out of t-town for t-two days, and he already h-had someone else wh-when I got back.”

“It’s his loss,” Adam whispered into her hair, his hand rubbing small circles on her back. “He’ll never find a girl better than you. You’re Allison fucking Iraheta!” he finished firmly.

Alli choked out a laugh and pulled back a bit. “Thank you,” she said softly, wiping her eyes. “You always know what to say.”

“Hey, you’re my little sis, it’s my job,” Adam said, ruffling her hair. “You sure you’re okay?” he asked after a moment.

Alli nodded. She started to say something, but stopped when the doorbell rang. “I’m sorry, were you expecting company?” she asked, her eyes widening. She started to stand up, but Adam grabbed her wrist and pulled her back onto the couch.

“No, it‘s probably just one of the neighbors,” Adam said simply. “I’ll be right back.” he held her hand a moment longer and pressed a kiss against her knuckles before leaving to answer the door.

“Hey, Adam,” Kris said with a weak smile when Adam opened the door.

Adam stared at him in surprise for a moment, his eyes taking in the red-rimmed eyes and the duffel bag sitting at his feet. The story practically wrote itself. He gave Kris a sympathetic smile. “You had a rough night too?”

“You could say that,” Kris said with a laugh that sounded way too forced.

“Well you’ve got good timing,” Adam said with a comforting smile. He picked up Kris’ bag and let him inside.

“What do you mean?” Kris asked, glancing at Adam curiously.

“Alli’s here,” Adam said in a hushed tone. “Remember Rob?”

“Yeah, that guy she started dating a few weeks ago?”

“That’s the one. Well, when Alli went to that interview in New York, she got back a day early and went to surprise Rob at his house.” Adam grimaced a bit and shot a mournful look towards the living room. “It wasn’t exactly a warm welcome.”

“I’m sorry,” Kris said hurriedly, trying to grab his duffel bag from Adam, but Adam kept it out of his reach. “I’ll go, this is a bad time.”

“No, really,” Adam insisted. He nodded towards the living room, “You just go in there with Alli for a minute and I’ll take this up to the guest room.”

For a moment Adam thought Kris would try and argue the point, but he just shrugged and walked into the living room. Adam raised his eyebrows after him. Kris didn’t even push the issue at all. Something was definitely wrong. He sighed a bit and took the duffel bag to the spare bedroom across the hall from his. Dropping it onto the foot of the bed, he turned and walked back out to join the two depressed friends.

“So, what’s the story?” Adam asked, planting himself on the couch between Alli and Kris. He threw an arm around each of them and turned his head slightly towards Kris, eyebrows raised in a gesture for him to start talking.

Kris rubbed his eyes for a moment and leaned back into the couch, the back of his head resting on Adam’s arm. Adam felt Alli shift slightly beside him so she could look at Kris. “Me and Katy had a fight,” Kris said simply.

“You’ll work it out,” Adam said with a small smile, “You always do.”

Kris just shook his head. “Yeah, but this time…I don’t know if I want to.”

Adam felt Alli tense beside him, and squeezed her shoulder carefully, turning his head to face Kris more. “What exactly was the fight about?” he asked, not quite sure if he wanted to know the answer.

“You,” Kris said without prompting.

“Why?” Adam asked, his eyes wide with horror. He’d be damned if he was going to be the reason that Kris and Katy broke up!

“It’s not your fault,” Kris said, and Adam smiled slightly, not from the reassurance, but just from the familiar way that Kris could always read his mind. “Katy was mad that I’ve been hanging out with you so much. She kept saying that she was competing to be first in my life or something.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Adam said, shaking his head.

“Yeah,” Alli piped in. “You’re crazy in love with her. No one can top that. Not even Adam,” she added playfully. Adam gave Alli a grateful smile for her effort at lightening the mood, though it did little good.

“Well, apparently she doesn’t agree,” Kris said sourly.

“So you just left to give both of you a chance to cool off?” Adam asked, still trying to figure out exactly how Kris had come to end up on his doorstep.

Kris winced slightly. “Not exactly,” he whispered. He sighed and rubbed his eyes again, but this time didn’t remove his hands from his face when he started speaking. “She told me I had to choose between you and her,” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

Adam froze. Katy had made him choose? And he chose- “Kris, this is crazy,” Adam said firmly. “You can’t choose a friend you just met a few months ago over your wif-”

“I can choose whoever the hell I want!” Kris yelled angrily. He closed his eyes hard and sat back. “Sorry,” he whispered. “It’s just that, I know you’d never make me choose, and it’s not fair that she made me.”

“I understand, I really do,” Adam insisted, squeezing Kris’ shoulder softly. “But you and Katy can’t just- I mean, you two are-” he finally broke off and just sighed, unable to put the perfect relationship into words.

“Over?” Kris threw in snidely.

“No,” Adam said firmly. “You and Katy will work this out.”

“But I don’t want us to! I knew this was coming, Adam. I could always tell she was mad whenever I called you instead of watching late-night reruns with her. Or when I went to the record label parties with you instead of inviting her.”

“But you said she didn’t like those things anyways,” Adam said, slightly confused.

“She doesn’t,” Kris sighed. “I mean, she loves the dresses and the four hours doing her hair and everything, but she hates all the paparazzi and the interviewers hounding her. So I stopped inviting her to come with me, but apparently she still wanted me to invite her just so she could say no or something. Women make no sense!”

“Why you think I stayed away from them for so long?” Adam pointed out with a smirk.

Kris glared at Adam, but it was half-hearted, so Adam just grinned at him until Kris finally looked away, shaking his head and laughing under his breath. “You’re something else, Adam,” he said, still chuckling a bit.

“Of course I am,” Adam said confidently. His expression softened, and he glanced back to Alli, then at Kris again. “I think what you both need is just a chance to get away.” His smile widened and he stood up. “Be right back,” he said, and practically ran into the kitchen, nearly dropping his cell phone in his haste to flip it open.

Ten minutes later, Adam walked back into the living room with a large smile. “What’re you so happy about?” Alli asked suspiciously.

“Same reason you should both be happy,” Adam said as though that explained everything. When Kris and Alli continued to look confused, Adam sighed and rolled his eyes. “We’re all going on vacation.”

“Vacation?” Alli squeaked excitedly.

“But we can’t,” Kris protested. “We have to record next week, and you know Beth will never let me go.”

Adam’s smile only widened at the mention of Kris’ overprotective handler. “Yeah, but I just cleared it with all of our handlers,” Adam said proudly. “I just explained the situation, and they said they would handle the producers and make sure we had two uninterrupted weeks of vacation.”

“Exactly what situation did you explain?” Kris asked, his eyes narrowing.

“The truth of course,” Adam said, acting offended that the thought that he would say anything else. “I told them that due to relationship problems you are both terminally depressed and need immediate rest and relaxation if they want a good album.”

Kris looked like he was going to object, but just laughed along with Alli instead. “Well, so we got time off. Now what?” Kris asked, looking at Adam who’d dropped back into his seat between the two.

“Whatever you two want,” Adam said, smiling from one to the other. “Though my vote is for somewhere tropical. A vacation’s not a vacation if you’re in below-freezing temperatures,” he said, entirely serious.

“I vote somewhere out of the country,” Kris said with a laugh, though Adam could tell he was being completely serious.

“Okay then,” Adam said, turning to Alli with a smile, “You get to pick. Somewhere tropical and out of the country.”

Alli looked thoughtful for a moment, then her eyes widened, “Can we go on a cruise? I’ve never been on one. We can go to the Bahamas!”

“Sounds good to me,” Kris said.

“Alright then, it’s settled,” Adam said decisively, pulling out his cell. Off handedly, he added, “Sam said she’d take care of all the arrangements.” he typed out a quick text to his handler and set his cell on the table.

“You’re lucky,” Kris said, rolling his eyes. “You get the really nice, agreeable handler. Beth is a tyrant. You know I asked her to get me a sprite a few weeks ago, and she gives me a sierra mist and tells me to get the hell over myself.”

Adam laughed. “Yeah, but you love her,” he teased.

Kris just laughed and shrugged, “She’s great. She just,” he paused and thought for a moment before finishing, “wants me to stay grounded.”

“Or maybe under the ground, with how hard she’s working you,” Alli said in a voice far too bright for a death-related comment, in Adam’s opinion.

“Thanks,” Kris said, rolling his eyes, though he was still smiling.

Adam picked up his phone when it vibrated and checked the text message that popped up. “Alright guys, we should get some sleep,” he said, stuffing his cell into his pocket and standing up. “Our flight leaves at five in the morning.”

“Who schedules a flight for five in the morning?” Alli whined.

“Adam’s handler isn’t so perfect after all,” Kris agreed.

“Just get your lazy butts up,” Adam laughed. “You can sleep on the plane. And we’ll go by your place to pack you a suitcase in the morning,” he added, glancing at Alli, then looked back at Kris. “Do you have enough stuff to take in that little duffel bag?”

Kris laughed. “We’re not all as high maintenance as you, Adam,” he pointed out. “I have enough clothes for about a week, I think. But I’ll probably end up buying a bunch of t-shirts while we’re gone anyways, so it’s fine.”

Adam considered pointing out that clothes weren’t the only thing to pack, but decided that would just end in another joke about being high maintenance, so he dropped it. “Alright then. G’night,” Adam called over his shoulder as he started up the stairs. Alli and Kris already knew where their usual rooms were whenever they stayed over, which had been surprisingly often as of late. And they said I didn’t need a house with five bedrooms!

-----------

By one o’clock the next day they were all smiling together for the overpriced group picture that Adam had insisted on purchasing three copies of.

“We really don’t need a picture of the three of us in front of the ship,” Kris said, shaking his head as he put the picture Adam handed him into a side pocket on his duffel bag. “We’ll take enough pictures ourselves for free.”

“It’s tradition,” Adam insisted.

“Who’s tradition?” Alli asked, raising an eyebrow at him.

“Doesn’t matter,” Adam said with a shrug, then narrowed his eyes at her. “Why are you putting your bag by the couch?”

Alli shrugged, “One of us has to take the foldout couch. You guys can have the beds.”

“Nope,” Adam said, crossing the surprisingly roomy cabin in two strides and scooping her bag up. “This trip is for you and Kris. So you two get the beds, and I’ll take the couch.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” Alli said, reaching for her bag, but Adam held it firmly out of her reach. “You’re the tallest. It won’t be comfortable at all!”

“Well you let me worry about that,” Adam said, tossing her bag onto one of the beds and dropping his next to the couch.

“You’re impossible,” Alli said, glaring at him.

“You love me because of it,” Adam said with a wink.

“No, I love you in spite of it,” Alli said, then laughed and ducked as Adam threw a pillow at her.

“I think you’re both just entertaining,” Kris said with a grin from his perch on the end of the other bed.

Adam glanced at Alli and raised his eyebrows, smirk firmly in place. She grinned at him. They both glanced at Kris, who looked like he was slowly realizing he shouldn’t have said anything. “Uh, guys,” Kris started, but stopped abruptly when Alli and Adam came flying at him. Adam tackled him back onto the bed, and a giggling Alli pounced onto Adam’s back, eliciting an amusing “Oof!” from Kris.

Adam laughed louder when Alli squeaked, losing her balance and falling sideways off of the bed. He grinned down at Kris and propped himself up on his elbows. “This is like 3D entertainment,” Adam said with a smirk.

Kris just laughed, shaking his head, “Whatever you say.” And maybe his voice sounded just a little too low. And maybe Adam stared just a little too intently. And maybe he stayed frozen like that just a little too long.

“Guys?” Alli’s voice jerked Adam back to the present and he jumped off of Kris like he’d caught fire.

“Wha?” Adam asked quickly, looking around at her. She didn’t notice anything, did she? Cause there was nothing to notice.

“Can we go down to the buffet? I’m starving,” Alli said, apparently having answered Adam’s wishes.

Adam breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at her, not daring to look back at Kris, who he could tell hadn’t moved from his place on the bed. “Yeah, me too.” Adam’s eyes followed the sound of the voice purely out of habit, and he really wished it hadn’t.

Kris was still lying back on the bed, though he’d propped himself up on his arms a bit, and was staring at Adam with an odd look of troubled confusion. A look that Adam knew too well what it meant, since he was sure he had the same look on his face. There had been a spark in that moment, but neither wanted to acknowledge it. It was so much easier to ignore something that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.

Alli effectively broke the eye contact by tugging at Adam’s arm and pulled him to the door. Adam was more grateful for that than he would admit, as he was pretty sure he couldn’t have torn his eyes away from Kris’ of his own free will. He heard the bed creak and knew Kris was following behind them. Adam mentally shook himself. This was Kris, his best friend who had been there for him when he and Drake broke up last month. And now Kris needed him like that, and Adam would be damned if he let him down over nothing. …So why was it so difficult to get his heart rate back to normal? Why was it abnormal in the first place? Too many questions, not enough answers.

----------

“I can’t believe you!” Alli cried, glaring at Adam so hard he had to look away for fear of catching on fire.

“What are you talking about?” Adam asked, feigning innocence that he knew she’d see right through.

“It’s not hard to put two and two together, Adam,” Alli said. “You’re dead tired and have rings around your eyes, and Kris is throwing up in the bathroom.” As if to help her case, a loud retching sound echoed from the bathroom.

Adam sighed and ran a hand over his face. “We just went to get a couple of drinks at the bar last night. It’s no big deal.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were going?” Alli demanded.

“Because you would’ve either wanted to come, which you’re not old enough to drink, or you would’ve felt left out, which would’ve made me and Kris feel like shit.”

“Too late,” Kris muttered, finally stepping out of the bathroom, a washcloth pressed against his mouth.

Alli barely spared Kris half a glance before she reeled into Adam again. “I’ll have you know that I’m nineteen, and the drinking age on a ship is eighteen. The American drinking-age doesn’t apply out here!”

“The hell it doesn’t,” Adam said, narrowing his eyes at her. “Alli, don’t even think about it.”

“You’re not my dad,” Alli said. Her hand closed around the strap of her purse sitting on the end of her bed, and she stormed out of the cabin.

“Damnit,” Adam muttered angrily under his breath. “Tell me that didn’t just happen,” he pleaded, glancing sideways at Kris.

“Wish I could,” Kris said sadly. “We should’ve just told her last night where we were going. Alli’s not the kind of girl to just go out and get drunk.”

“And now she’s gonna go get drunk cause she’s pissed off at me,” Adam finished the thought that he knew Kris didn’t have the heart to. He saw Kris nod slightly out of the corner of his eye. “Wait,” Adam’s head snapped up quickly, and his eyes widened.

“What?” Kris asked, raising his eyebrows at Adam.

“We’re in port today, aren’t we?” he asked distractedly, rushing to the window. He cursed under his breath when he saw people milling around on the street outside. “She’s going to go off the ship. What if she gets lost? We have to find-”

“Adam!” Kris’ voice made Adam freeze in the middle of hurriedly pulling a shirt over his head. “She’s nineteen. She can take care of herself.”

“But Kris-”

“No,” Kris said firmly, crossing his arms. “Just give her some breathing room. She’s a smart girl. She’ll come back tonight, and we can talk about this rationally, okay? Just give her some time to herself.”

Adam glared at him for a moment before sighing. Kris was right, but Adam wasn’t about to admit that without strings attached. “Fine, but if she gets lost in Nassau and left behind, I’m blaming you.”

Kris just gave him a wry smile and nodded to the bathroom. “I’m gonna take a shower, then we’ll go get some breakfast.”

----------

“But it would look great on you!” Adam insisted, pressing a shirt into Kris’ arms. “Just try it on!”

“No way,” Kris said, shaking his head. He pushed the shirt back at Adam, staring at it as though it might bite him. “If I put that thing on, I’ll be washing glitter out of my hair for a week!”

Adam looked down at the shirt. It was practically dripping in royal blue glitter. The reason why that was a bad thing escaped him. “It’s not going to kill you,” Adam said, rolling his eyes. “Besides, everything’s better with a little sparkle.”

“That’s debatable,” Kris said, rolling his eyes as Adam pushed him towards the dressing rooms.

“Glitter is never debatable!” Adam said, acting offended. If anyone else had said that, he wasn’t completely sure he would’ve been acting, but he knew Kris just liked to tease him about anything related to glitter. He finally shoved Kris into one of the dressing rooms, tossing the shirt over the top of the door when Kris shoved it back at him at the last moment before the door shut.

Half an hour later, they were walking down the boardwalk looking for a place for lunch, each of them holding a shopping bag. “I still can’t believe you talked me into buying that,” Kris muttered as they sat at a table under an umbrella at some little café.

“It looked good on you,” Adam insisted.

“Well, at least Alli will probably get a laugh out of it,” Kris said with a sigh.

At the mention of her name, Adam glanced around them, as though a little fireball would magically pop out from behind one building or another. He heard Kris sigh and looked back at him. He gave an apologetic smile. He knew he’d been a bit more edge today than he normally was, mostly whenever he was reminded of the missing redhead. “I think I’m gonna get a cheeseburger,” he said in an effort to change the subject.

Kris latched onto the subject change. “That’s sounds really good, actually,” he said, and ordered for the both of them when the waiter came over.

---------

“Kris,” Adam groaned, covering his face with his eyes as they went back to the cabin.

“Hey, don’t worry,” Kris said, glancing quickly around the empty cabin before looking back at Adam. “She’ll be back soon. Just calm down, okay?” he reached behind him to push the door closed, his eyes still locked on Adam, when something stopped the door.

“It’s about time you guys got back,” Alli said, out of breath, as though she’d just ran from down the hallway. “I forgot my key when I left.”

“Alli!” Adam cried with relief, pulling her into a hug. “Where were you? Are you okay? You’re not drunk, are you?”

“Stop with the interrogation,” Alli muttered, half-heartedly trying to get out Adam’s grasp. “I was just walking around on the island a bit with some girls that are on the boat with us. And I didn’t drink a thing besides soda, I swear.”

“I’m sorry,” Adam said belatedly. “I shouldn’t have treated you like a kid.”

Alli gave him a weak smile. “It’s fine. You’re just being protective.”

“Well that was way too much drama if you ask me,” Kris said with a laugh.

Adam gave him a bright smile, then turned back to Alli as she started to speak again. “How about we all go down to the bar tonight? And I’ll just have a coke, okay?”

“Sounds good,” Adam said with a laugh.

“Okay, I’m gonna take a shower,” Alli said, and Adam released her involuntarily.

“See? Told you she’d be okay,” Kris said with a smile after Alli had shut the bathroom door.

“Thanks,” Adam said, grinning as he pulled Kris into a hug. They stayed frozen like that for a few moments. Adam knew this was the part where he was supposed to let go, but he really didn’t want to. And what motivation did he have to let go now? There was no guilt in holding on just a moment longer than necessary now that he and Katy had broken up. They just broke up a couple days ago, a voice in the back of his head pointed out. But then, Kris didn’t seem like he wanted to let go either, so that made it okay.

When Adam finally started to pull back, he felt Kris’ hands fist in the back of his shirt. Not pausing enough to think, Adam closed the distance between them and pressed his lips softly against Kris’. He pulled back before Kris had a second to respond. “I’m sorry,” he said quickly. “I shouldn’t have-” the rest of the thought was cut off when he felt Kris’ mouth on his again. Adam put his arms around Kris’ waist, pulling him impossibly closer. A soft moan escaped his lips when he felt Kris’ hand tangling in his hair.

They broke apart what felt like years later, the only sounds in the room of their heavy breathing and the shower running only a few feet away. Adam just stared at Kris, cheeks tinged red and lips shining, begging to be kissed again. Tearing his eyes away to look at Kris in the eye again, Adam realized he didn’t have a clue what to say. What do you say to your best friend who just broke up with his wife a few days ago, came to you for help, went on vacation with you and a mutual friend, and kissed you? Or maybe Adam kissed him first. He honestly couldn’t remember at that moment. And as much as Adam tried, he was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to think of anything he’d heard about what to do in this situation.

“Kris, I, uh, I’m sor-”

“Don’t be,” Kris said, shaking his head.

“Why?” Adam asked, barely able to breathe.

“Because I’m not.” Kris said the words with such certainty and conviction that Adam’s knees nearly gave out beneath him. He was sure they would have if the water in the bathroom shutting off hadn’t jerked him back to reality.

“Adam?” Alli’s voice called form inside the bathroom.

“Yeah?” Adam responded, his steady voice surprising even himself.

“Can you hand me the dress I hung in the closet? I forgot to grab it.”

“Sure,” Adam said, carefully avoiding looking at Kris as he shuffled towards the closet. He flipped through the three dresses that Alli had brought, and picked out a dark purple one. He knocked once on the bathroom door and Alli opened it an inch, just far enough for him to slip the dress inside to her.

“Thanks,” she said as the door shut again.

“No problem,” Adam muttered so quietly he was pretty sure she didn’t hear him. He stayed facing the bathroom door for a moment, both dreading and looking forward to the moment when he would have to turn back around and face Kris.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. It just wasn’t. Kris was his best friend. Nothing more, nothing less. It was Kris for heaven’s sake! No matter how much he told himself that, the few words made him feel both less sure of himself, and more sure. How that was possible he had long since given up trying to reason. Actually, now that he thought about it, he’d given up trying to reason out a lot of things since he met Kris.

“Adam?” Kris’ small voice broke his train of thought, and he turned slowly to face him. Kris was staring at him expectantly, as though waiting for something. Adam wasn’t even quite sure what it was that Kris was waiting for, but whatever it was, Adam wanted to give it to him a hundred times over, just because of that look of longing on Kris’ face.

“I don’t know what to say here,” Adam said regretfully, shaking his head. He didn’t know what Kris was expecting, or what he wanted from him, so he might as well be honest about it.

“That must be a first,” Kris said with a wry smile. Adam smiled too. The statement would normally have made him laugh, but he was sure the louder sound would break whatever electricity that coursed between them, and he never wanted to break that.

But he didn’t have to. The bathroom door opened abruptly and Alli spun around in the door frame. “What do you guys think?” she asked.

“Y-You look great,” Adam said, only stuttering a little bit.

“Gorgeous,” Kris piped in with a smile.

Alli beamed at them. “Shall we go then?” she asked formally, curtsying with a small laugh.

“As you wish, my lady,” Adam said, playing along as he bowed and held out an arm for her. Alli giggled and took his arm.

“Now now, such a lovely lady surely deserves two escorts tonight,” Kris joined in, stepping to her other side and offering his arm to her.

“Oh why thank you, kind sirs,” Alli said with a smile, taking his arm in her other one. “Tonight will certainly be one to remember.”

“I’m sure it will,” Adam said softly, catching Kris’ eye over Alli’s head. Kris gave him a half-smile and Adam had to swallow hard, tearing his eyes away and telling himself to not get distracted by his best friend. Yeah, that’ll happen, his mind supplied sarcastically.

----------

Two hours later, Adam and Kris were interrogating two teenage girls at the bar. “And how many drinks have you both had?” Kris asked, raising an eyebrow at the obviously tipsy blonde.

“I’ve just had one,” the redhead piped in, “And she’s had three.”

“Guys, seriously,” Alli whined. “We’re just going to a movie. I’ve been hanging out with them all day and we passed a theatre on the way back to the boat.”

“Fine,” Adam said reluctantly. “Just be careful. And what time does the movie get out?”

“It starts at ten, and I think it’s like two hours long or something,” Alli said. “So around midnight?”

“You’ll come straight back to the room afterwards, right?” Kris asked pointedly.

“And you’ve got your key this time, right?” Adam asked.

“Yes and yes,” Alli said, flashing the card key from her pocket, then turned back to the girls. “Come on, let’s go.”

Half an hour later, Adam was in the bathroom of their cabin splashing water on his face and trying to convince himself why he shouldn’t just jump Kris. No particularly good reasons came to mind, but he was still pretty sure it wasn’t a good idea. The only good reason he could come up with was that Kris was his best friend, and he didn’t want to lose that. Most straight guys were so awkward around him when he started talking about relationships that he’d never really had a good guy friend he could be completely open with. Yeah, see how well that worked out? Said best friend has now broken up with his wife, and kissed me…or I kissed him…doesn’t matter. Either way, kissing was involved, and it was completely not platonic.

Though not much in his mind was resolved, Adam stepped back into the cabin, carefully ignoring how Kris didn’t have a shirt on, and was stretched out on the bed flipping through channels on the tv. Adam turned his back on the sight, busying himself with checking his phone for any new messages. None.

“Hey,” a voice from behind him forced him to turn around. Adam carefully set his phone on the couch cushion as he turned to face Kris. The tv was off, and Kris had moved so he was just sitting on the edge of the bed. They didn’t say anything for a long moment. Adam wasn’t exactly surprised by that. Even in moments like these, when they both knew there was so much to say, it never needed to be audible. They understood each other, in a way Adam hadn’t understood anyone else.

That was the reason he was afraid to take this, whatever this was, a step further, and also the reason why he was so desperate to. Kris stood at the same moment that Adam stepped towards him. A thousand words unsaid between them, ten thousand mutually understood. Adam closed the distance between them before he lost his nerve, cupping the back of Kris’ neck and pressing a firm, though gentle kiss against his lips.

When Kris moaned against his lips, his tongue demanding entrance, Adam leaned his back against the bed, mostly from a lack of his legs being able to support him. He gasped as he felt Kris’ hands under his shirt, on his back, touching his chest, moving lower.

“Wait, Kris,” Adam said, pulling back abruptly. Kris gave him a questioning look. Adam didn’t know what to say, didn’t want this to end, but he knew Kris was hurting from losing Katy, and probably wasn’t thinking straight. As cliché as he knew it sounded, he had to ask, “Are you su-”

Kris’ lips cut off his question. It was quick, but with enough passion to take Adam’s breath away. Kris pulled back and gave Adam a sad smile. “No, I’m not,” he said. Adam frowned, opening his mouth to apologize as he started to pull away, but stopped when Kris’ hand latched onto his wrist.

Before he knew what was happening, Kris had flipped them over, and his lips were ghosting over his neck, pressing soft, faint kisses along his jaw line, finally landing on his lips, which he claimed with much more fervor and enthusiasm. Kris pulled back when they both needed to breathe, though only about an inch or so, and caught Adam’s confused gaze. He pressed another quick kiss to Adam’s lips, then moved to his ear, whispering softly, “Now ask me if I want to stop.”

----------

Alli got in long after midnight, but neither Kris nor Adam were too bothered with questioning her about it; especially as the first words out of her mouth the next morning when she saw Kris and Adam curled up in the bed were, “What the hell did I miss last night?” The only other thing she said before going to take a shower was, “I’m happy for you guys and all, but seriously? Guys are such a pain, I think you’re both crazy!” Though Adam returned the wink and smirk she shot at him after Kris had returned his face to where it had been buried against his chest for most of the night.
