Written for a challenge. My first bit of non-HP fan fiction in years.

Genre: Hawaii Five-O
Words: 500
Title: Aftermath

There is never a time in any officer's life when it becomes easy to lose someone. Steve McGarrett knew this, he had always known it, and today he had been reminded. There had been a hostage situation, a woman with a vengeful ex-husband, and the ending had not fared well.

The team had done all they could, he kept telling himself that. They had tried, with everything they had, but it had still all been in vain. Sometimes you lost people, you just couldn't save everyone, though he was loathed to have to admit it.

He was lost in his thoughts when Danny appeared, a cold beer suddenly pressed into his hands. Neither of them spoke, just drank, staring out across Steve's backyard to the seemingly endless ocean beyond it.

It was okay, just to sit like this. To not need words to know exactly what the other was thinking about. Steve knew that Danny got it, in a way that people who had never had to live it couldn't possibly understand. In their line of work they not only put their own lives on the line every day, but they also took the fragile lives of others into their hands. It was both terrifying and self satisfying, and today it was just downright miserable.

"She had kids," Steve said after a long moment, eyes squinting as the sun began to set below the horizon line, the sky suddenly shot through with blinding color. "Kono said she had kids. They lost both their parents in one day, one fell swoop. It was hard enough losing my mother, but losing them both and so young? Something is just so wrong about that."

Taking a long pull from his beer, Danny said nothing in response for quite awhile. When he did speak his voice was soft, registering the cold reality of the situation and not willing to make any quips about it. "That's the thing about life though, you know? You can't predict it, you just have to live it and do what you can. None of us wanted this outcome, but it happened and it's over. I'm just glad that we all came out fine on the other side."

Exhaling, Steve started to put his lips to the mouth of his bottle but paused instead, eyes sliding sideways to look at Danny sitting beside him. "Admit it. You'd miss me if I was gone," he said suddenly, cracking the faintest hint of a smile. "Wouldn't you? You totally would."

"What? Where did that even come from?" Danny asked, glancing back at him and shaking his head. "You have this knack for switching the topic of conversation at ridiculous and inconvenient times. Finish your beer. We aren't talking about that."

Settling back, Steve took another swig and smiled again. The light change of topic brought some comfort to the situation, and even if Danny wouldn't admit it out loud, it was nice to know that he'd be missed. By someone at least.
