Ten Minutes Ahead of the Next Guy
2007 Part Twenty-Nine
by Exfilia
The woman who hung around after the morning gaggle was older than Will.
"You're a reporter?" he asked.
"Chris Hathaway, Digigazette."
"You don't look like you work for a web site."
"Tell me about it. Look, I have a source that says Deburri terrorists are holding Governor Blanchard's wife."
"Deburri terrorists aren't that stupid."
"So the White House knows nothing about it?"
"I'll check," he said, "but no one's mentioned any such thing to me. When's your deadline?"
Chris felt herself wince.
"It's a website," she said. "My deadline is ten minutes ahead of the next guy."

"Mr. Vice President," said a voice in the White House portico.
"Tom, good to see you." Actually Leo couldn't remember the California governor being all that active in the campaign. Maybe he'd come to patch things up with the president. "Really good to see you," Leo told him.
"Really?" asked the governor. "I had almost decided the administration believed that California had dropped off the face of the earth."
"Now, Tom, we were out there almost constantly during the campaign."
"Yeah, but nobody in my administration was on the podium."
"You should get Sam Seaborn on your podium."
"You don't think he might be after a permanent place up there?"
Leo suppressed a smile. "I doubt it," he said. The governor peered at him, waiting for something further. Leo wasn't going to give it to him, though. This man had no need to know that Sam Seaborn had come within two weeks of running for president in the last election. No way he would run for governor. Leo wasn't going to say it out loud, though. If this man had any political instincts at all, he would already have known that Sam was no threat to him.
"Well," replied the governor, "if that's the case, you think I could get some support when I sign the new state gun law? I'm getting all kinds of flak from the right...."
"Say no more," said Leo. "As someone who's been shot at, I have the greatest respect for California's groundbreaking legislation, and I will personally stand beside you on the podium when you sign it." If nothing else, it would take his mind off Jed and the danger he was in. The governor smiled and pumped his hand, and Leo moved on.
The End
