Speaking of Dangerous
2007 Part Thirty-One
by Exfilia
Will Bailey leaned in Toby's office door.
"There's a web reporter with a source saying Caroline Blanchard has been kidnapped by Deburri terrorists."
"The things you hear on the World Wide Web," said Toby. "Tell the kid to grow up."
"She's not a kid," said Will. "Strangely, she's one of the older reporters in there."
"Do we know her?"
"I don't." Will dug through his notes. "Chris Something. Chris...."
"Hathaway?"
"You know her?"
"Used to work for U.S. News & World Report. Then she worked for the campaign in New York."
Will felt his mouth drop open.
"She came back here?" he said. "And we credentialed her?"
"You're going to tell me you didn't know this? No, if a reputable news outlet hired her, we pretty much had to credential her. Be careful, though. She knows her stuff, and we can't afford...."
"Any appearance of favoritism?"
"We can't afford to let her get ahead of us on this, and Chris might. I'll find out what's going on." Toby peered past Will into his outer office. "Rina! Get me Hank Blanchard!"
"Speaking of dangerous," Will said. He shook his head and retreated to his own office.
"Maybe you could take them to the country for the rest of the week," C.J. said at breakfast. "I could come down for the weekend, and we'd all come back together."
"Let's give it a while," Danny said, "and not disrupt Katie's routine any further."
"I want them to be happy, Danny. I want us to be happy."
"By the time they're in high school, this will all be over and we'll be able to spend every minute of every day making sure their lives are perfect."
"Wouldn't you have loved that when you were in high school? Your parents spending every minute...?"
He laughed and squeezed her hand, but released it when someone knocked at the door. Tracy Kovatnic stepped inside.
"Madame President? You're wanted in the sit room."
"Brilliant." She turned to Danny. "We'll talk more when I'm done?"
"Talking to you is the joy of my life."
"Just talking, Nimrod?"
His wicked grin was all the answer she needed.
The End
