Mr. Stuart’s words stung - Cassie B. had, maybe foolishly, truly expected a word of congratulation this time. She and her team were proud of the work. The brief had been very confusing and the time-frame insanely short.
So what if she had given in to a little expressionism in one of the heroic scenes? It broke up all the talking. Plus, she knew Miyoko K. was good at animating fires and dance moves.
But Cassie B. said none of this. “I see,” she said instead. “Any other notes that I should pass along to the team?”
“Hm?” He seemed like he was already getting bored with the conversation. “No, not really.”
“Was it accurate?”
Mr. Stuart inclined his head quizzically to one side. “Please elaborate on that, Cassie B.”
“The building,” she said, hardly understanding what was compelling her to speak. “Did we accurately depict the outside of the building?”
Mr. Stuart looked her directly in the eye for several seconds, his face motionless but for the blinking of his eyes.
“Since you delivered under such a close deadline,” Mr. Stuart said, “regardless of the dramaturgical failings that may have marred the final product, you and your team will be treated to the egg bar.”
Cassie B. thought about the beautiful fire bursting from the head of the angry man with the mustache in their video. To her, Miyoko’s flourishes had made him seem more real - even though neither she nor Miyoko had ever actually seen fire, or dancing men.
She wondered what would happen right now if she got up on Mr. Stuart’s desk, spun around, and burst into flames.
