A thousand sunbeams could not compare to the radiance of Fujigaya’s smile. He glowed as he laughed in a way so tantalizing that Senga could never forget it. It was beautiful, the way Fujigaya’s energy burned through him, leaving him breathless and exhilarated for having just been there.

“Some will tell you that you can just shine as you are and that’ll be good enough,” Fujigaya said, lips quirking upwards in a way that dazzled Senga. “But that’s not enough. You have to learn how to shine on your own. Because if someone else shines brighter, nobody is going to see you.”

Senga smiled and nodded quickly. He didn’t really understand why Fujigaya was saying that when all he had to do was smile to put the others to shame. Senga knew he himself was just a Red Star and he would never have that sort of glow.

But Fujigaya didn’t smile much, anymore.

Senga wondered why he didn’t, when he could shine so brightly. He wondered why Fujigaya chose solitude when it had never suited him. It hurt Senga in a way; to see Fujigaya isolate himself when there didn’t seem to be a need. But Fujigaya would drift away and nobody would reach out to pull him back. Senga trailed after him, but Fujigaya didn’t say much and Senga knew they were both lonely as they stood side by side.

He realized they were afraid, the Blue Stars and the White Dwarfs and everyone else. They were afraid of Fujigaya. Even Kitayama - who Senga had always seen as the fiercest in the O class - was afraid of Fujigaya.

Senga wondered why.

One day they told him.

“You can never see Fujigaya again,” they said, and Senga felt himself falter.

And then they told him.

Fujigaya was a Supernova. He burned so brightly that soon he would crash and burn, obliterate himself and all that was around him. He could die. There was no knowing if he’d rebirth himself in a nebula or if he’d simply fade away after his last blaze of glory.

There was no knowing if he’d collapse and implode, becoming a dreaded Black Hole that could destroy them all. So the Galaxy would banish him, to await his fate.

Alone.

“You must never see him again,” they reminded Senga. They made him promise and Senga broke it immediately, seeking Fujigaya out because it was wrong. Fujigaya shone too bright to be gone. Senga needed him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked as soon as he found Fujigaya. He was angry, though not particularly at Fujigaya. At the Universe, for wanting to extinguish Fujigaya’s radiance. At the Galaxy for punishing Fujigaya for his birth and nature.

At himself for leaving Fujigaya alone.

Fujigaya reached out and gently laced their fingers together. “I wanted to shine… I wanted you to notice me.”

They shared a kiss, the first and the last and the most perfect kiss that blazed through Senga as he held Fujigaya close, holding him tight as Fujigaya drank him in and gave as much in return as he took. He realized Fujigaya was afraid and he held him so close he wasn’t sure where he ended and where Fujigaya began.

Death, rebirth, or destruction. Nobody, not even Fujigaya himself would know his destiny until it was too late.

Senga knew he would never see Fujigaya again.

In the end, Fujigaya is pulled away from him. In the end, Senga was left alone with his lips tingling and his heart stolen. The Galaxy said nothing as they took Fujigaya away, but as they looked to Senga he could feel their pity.

Later Nikaido found him, reaching out to tentatively touch his shoulder. “Kento…? We… we can still go watch him… If you want.”

Senga touched his lips for a moment. He knew that Fujigaya’s last moments would be beautiful beyond words, that there would be legends and stories, people immortalizing his fate, whatever it would be. It would be a symphony of light and power, of life and death. It would be everything Fujigaya had been to Senga.

Death. Rebirth. Destruction.

But whatever happened, Fujigaya had Senga’s heart. Whatever happened, Senga was his to have and to keep.

“No,” he said, turning away, to return home, a kiss on his lips and his heart was where it belonged. There was nothing left to see, because Senga would always keep the memory of Fujigaya’s smile.

Senga promised this to himself and to Fujigaya.

And he shone a little brighter.
