I never thought I'd ever write this pairing. (I hope

We should never ever be apart, Yokoo had said many years before to Iida, clutching his hand and letting their arms swing in a childish manner. Too bad that was the day Iida wanted to announce to his friend that he had decided to leave the agency. He wished he didn’t see Yokoo’s smile fade away from his face that day. The memory of it had haunted his dreams for years, stinging with sorrow even in the daylight at times.
Iida looked out of the misted window, sitting at a small table beside it inside a warm cafe. Needles of rain outside were plunging on the streets, the cars and the occasional passerby, sometimes unlucky enough not to have an umbrella.
His coffee was cold, he didn’t even drink it yet, lost as he was thinking about a past to which he couldn’t return.
The storm outside was getting worse; the wind was destroying the umbrellas and it didn’t make much difference to have one or not when the rain was hitting from all sides.
Iida frowned, took his phone out and typed a mail: “Hey, the weather is horrible, don’t worry if you can’t make it, we’ll meet another time.”
He was actually annoyed because he had waited so long for this day but he ended up cancelling the meeting even if he was already there. He took another look outside, and decided to drink his coffee before leaving, hoping the rain would stop by the time he finished. He didn’t even notice the sound of the door opening behind him five minutes later.
“No, we won’t meet another time.”
Iida turned around and saw Yokoo standing by the entrance of the cafe, water dripping from his coat and hair. He stepped inside, after having wiped the soles of his shoes on the doormat and exchanged a gaze with the barista to seek his approval before entering the place and sprinkling water all over the floor.
“Sorry if I’m late. Next time I’ll be on time.”
“Don’t worry.” Iida pushed the chair in front of him away from the table with his leg inviting Yokoo to sit on it.
“You said it was fine not to meet today.” Yokoo pouted while taking off his wet coat, and dropped on the chair.
“Because I thought you’d have trouble getting here.”
“No trouble at all,” Yokoo answered while looking absent-mindedly at the menu he already knew by heart.
“Are you mad?”
“No, not at all,” Yokoo was still not looking at Iida in front of him.
Iida started giggling, “Oh, I see. You so are!”
“I was in the middle of the storm waiting for it to calm down before walking here from the station, and then I saw your mail. I thought you were going to leave so I ran here.”
“At least you had an umbrella.”
“Not anymore, the wind destroyed it. You owe me one.”
Iida chortled then made sign to the barista to bring two coffees. The drinks arrived. They waited a bit to let them cool down while staring at the rain, now diminished, falling in drops against the window.
“Anyway, you’re not allowed to cancel at the last minute,” Yokoo announced after he put down his cup.
“I won’t do it anymore. Promise. What should we do next?”
“Ah, actually I have to go back early. I need to practice before tomorrow’s rehearsals.”
“Eeeh?! But we finally meet after almost three weeks!” Iida sounded disappointed as he slid forward on the chair.
“We can meet again next week. You finished with your job too, right?”
“But you said that we should never ever be apart,” Iida muttered and Yokoo looked at him perplexed.
“You said that the day I told you I was going to leave,” Iida explained, pouting because Yokoo didn’t immediately remember.
Yokoo smiled and used his knuckles to hit Iida’s fist on the table.
“And we haven’t been apart since then, haven’t we?”
Iida returned the smile. They might not have had the time to meet every other day, both busy with their respective lives, but Iida felt like their hands were still wrapped together and swinging by his side.
