Not Kisumai! :D Even if I've started to watch this anime and got to love the characters because of YokoNika's butai u__u; I also understand that not many people know what this is about, sorry about that.
“No more wine, please,” Kircheis said stopping Reinhard’s hand before he could grab the bottle. “I think we celebrated enough.”
“Kircheis!” Reinhard’s sudden authoritative tone surprised Kircheis who almost stood at attention, but then he relaxed again, since he knew they were already off duty and drinking in Reinhard’s room.
“Kircheis,” Reinhard continued, his voice calmer than before and his lips pouting. “You’ll have a new spaceship, and the promotion and... we need to celebrate!”
“We celebrated all evening and with full a bottle of wine.” Kircheis pointed out, still holding firmly Reinhard’s wrist. “It’s late now and...”
Kircheis couldn’t finish the sentence because Reinhard stood up and tried to liberate himself from Kircheis’s grip but his sudden movement resulted only in Kircheis managing to turn him around and hold him more firmly.
“Reinhard-sama... are you drunk by any chance?”
“Release me!” Reinhard ordered, but Kircheis didn’t move and couldn’t manage to suppress a chortle.
“You’d totally be able not to end up trapped like this if you weren’t drunk.”
“I’m not drunk! I’m...” Reinhard wrenched his wrist and set himself free from the other only to collapse on the chair again. “I don’t get drunk. Alcohol in an abominable vice. It shouldn’t be drank to...”
“I know, I know. It’s just that your face is all red.” Kircheis said, bending over to look at Reinhard’s face. He saw the icy blue eyes of the other staring at him for a brief moment then turning away with scorn.
Did I do something wrong?
Kircheis knew his friend better than anyone else. He could read everything in one look before Reinhard even talked. But this time he wasn’t sure about what was going on. Reinhard himself promoted him assistant commander, he was even going to have his personal flagship. He could be more useful to him. He could fight his battles for him.
“I will still fight only for your dream Reinhard-sama.”
“But you won’t be standing next to me as before.”
Kircheis smiled. So it was that, after all. They won’t be able to physically fight side by side anymore. Kircheis realized that he wouldn’t be there to protect him against immediate danger, that someone else would stand behind Reinhard’s command chair in battles, while he would be leading his fleet.
Kircheis thought about how Reinhard had allowed Oberstein to be on his side. Neither of them trusted him, but Kircheis felt particularly adverse to him. Maybe if he weren’t so kind-hearted he would be able to take care of the shady affairs like Oberstein could. He hated to admit that, but Oberstein was right when he said he was no use to Reinhard for such things. Kircheis wasn’t able to shoot an unarmed person. He didn’t know how to use obscure methods to obtain what he wanted. It was true that from now on the battle wouldn’t be only in the battlefield, but also in the shiny court palace, and it wasn’t a battle that could be fought openly. But if Reinhard asked, if only he asked, Kircheis would have pulled the trigger. If Reinhard asked he would do even the dirty jobs. He had just hoped that would be no need for it, he had just hoped Reinhard could be as virtuous as he had ever been. Maybe Reinhard thought he would stop his wrongdoings like he had always done. Maybe he didn’t want Kircheis to speak for his conscience anymore. Kircheis felt like a knife was piercing his heart. It simply wasn’t possible that Reinhard was sending him away for that. Most probably he didn’t want Kircheis to get his hands dirty. Kircheis couldn’t read him as easily as he could do before, but he decided to do the only thing he could do. The only thing he had ever done.
“I’m always next to you.” He smiled as Reinhard’s surprised eyes met his look. “That’s the place I’m supposed to be.” His hands went to grab Reinhard’s hand and looking into Reinhard’s eyes, he felt that he was still the same boy that came to live next to him many years ago. He didn’t want him to change, but he knew some things were necessary to reach the place where Reinhard wanted to be. Kircheis had never wanted to stop him, actually he would follow him anywhere, help him getting there and realize his dream. But he felt that this was the time he needed to be as close to him as possible. Kircheis knew it wasn’t enough for Reinhard to just have him closer, he knew he couldn’t support him all by himself, that Reinhard needed the help of other people, even if they were as dodgy as Oberstein. He released Reinhard’s hands after the other had nodded with a determined look in his eyes, but Reinhard placed a hand on his head and started to twist his fingers among the other’s crimson hair.
“I know Kircheis. It’s our dream, right?”
Kircheis nodded but now he felt like he was the one who needed to drink more wine.
