For Kitayama, leaving the forest was hard.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go and become part of the King’s Company, to fight for his kingdom and protect the lands, but the forest was his home. His mother’s family had always lived in the forest, as far back as memory could serve.

But to the city he would go.

“It’s a part of you too,” his mother reminded him, unwilling to mention the father who had given Kitayama his city blood. Kitayama had learned from a very young age not to ask about that. So he went, with Totsuka at his side. Once in the city, they were assigned to their garrison and immediately thrown into training.

It was months later that he met Fujigaya.

“It was an accident,” Kitayama said, standing between a couple of city snots and the clumsy fool who’d knocked into them. “Dust isn’t going to ruin your precious skin, so why don’t you go bother someone else?”

The leader of this little band was sleek like a fox, all clever eyes and sharp smiles, and he had a dangerous glint as he stepped forward. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing, treeclimber?”

“Well, it most certainly isn’t you, thank the skies,” Kitayama said, his mouth a bit ahead of him. This was a noble, clear as day from the way the boy spoke, and he could easily have Kitayama thrown in jail or banished from the city. But Kitayama also didn’t believe in bending backwards over status.

For his part, the noble was speechless, spluttering indignantly at Kitayama for a moment before Yokoo appeared with a falsely cheerful smile.

“Please excuse us, the lad here’s been drinking a lot lately, what with the Games coming up and all,” he said, speaking a mile a minute while clamping his hand on Kitayama’s elbow and forcibly dragging him away.

“Are you insane? Forest-borns, you never have any self-preservation,” he said, turning back to Kitayama once they were back with Totsuka and Kawai, well out of eyesight. “Did you really say you were getting it on with-“

“I was not,” Kitayama snorted. “As if I’d go running around with some prick dressed in silk?”

Yokoo turned his eyes heavenward in despair before turning to Kitayama again. “Kitayama, I realize you’ve not been in the city long, but you do know that was the oldest son of the Fujigaya family? As in one of the Great Ducal families? As in the King’s nephew and heir to the throne if the Crown Prince dies?”

Kitayama opened his mouth and then closed it. He hadn’t known that at all.

Then he shrugged. “All the more reason why I’d not want anything to do with his family jewels, thank you.”

Yokoo turned red and Kawai tried to stifle a laugh, promptly choking on his beer.
