My Web-comics

Um, hello! I'm artist from Russia. I apologize in advance if my English is bad.
I'm writing a web-comic (well, more like visual novel, maybe), where most of main characters are PoCs. It's experimental work, combining traditional and flash animation with interactive elements, where reader should unlock secrets for fully understanding of story. This ( Read more... )

Thank you a lot for the quick answer! That was helpful and gave me many interesting ideas about further story development. And that part about Asia... You are right. At first I wanted to make the confusion about his ancestry as one of many reasons for antagonism of that particular character. But now I'll think about other ways how to play with that part of story.

A note: It is possible that Quint could be of East Asian descent and not know what nationality his father was. As you said, some East Asian people can tell the difference, but not everyone can -- and sometimes, the difference is honestly too difficult to spot, especially between Korean and Japanese.

I live in Japan, and people here "pass" all the time, both intentionally (many Korean and Chinese immigrants do this) and unintentionally. Hell, I'm white and I've been asked if I have Japanese blood.

That said, OP, it's certainly a good idea to avoid implying that the different Asian nationalities/ethnicities are the same, outside of the similarity in appearance. But it wouldn't necessarily be wrong to have him and others unable to tell, especially if he's half-white.

I'm in the middle of my final exams, so I can't look at this thoroughly right now, but from what I can tell, it looks like you have a thoughtful and diverse cast, and a very nice-looking web-comic, too! As others said, generalizing "Asian" may be problematic, so spend some time thinking about Quint's father's heritage and culture. And to avoid making any kind of unfortunate implications, just make sure you have other Asian characters in your story. You're almost always going to run into that problem if you have token minorities (i.e., only one that represents that entire group).

Hi autumn_sacura, I just finished reading the first chapter. It's not too bad at all! I think you have some good characters and a storyline. You shouldn't be worried about Quint and unfortunate implications, but it wouldn't hurt to have other Asian characters, even as minor ones, to have a balance. Just be sure to develop well-rounded characters and keep in mind what others have said. I noticed you listed Felix above-what kind of background does he have?

Hello! Thank you for kind words ^__^ I'll surely add more Asian characters, as well as many others interesting characters, if my work will gain enough of popularity to be prolonged.
Well, about Felix... At first I wanted to make him a Jew. But there was too much controversy (some people insist what being jewish is only about religion, while in Russia it's almost always about ethnicity) so I decided to leave out this question for now.
