"How often do you dye your hair?" Kristen asks, fingers combing through the strands, white-blonde locks soft but somehow brittle, breakable. Like glass, Kristen thinks, and if that isn't a metaphor for something, for this whole situation, then she doesn't know what is.
She's drunk. She only ever gets this philosophical when she's drunk.
Dakota, of course, is sober, because Dakota's always sober, sensible. That's just who she is. "A lot," she answers. "I have to have it touched up a lot."
Kristen nods, slowly, watching the room gently spin. It's kind of soothing. "I don't think I could be bothered to do that," she says.
"It's definitely a commitment," Dakota says, and Kristen decides to ignore the way she emphasizes that last word. Instead, she shifts closer, kisses Dakota, once, twice, closed-mouthed and careful

1. When, if ever, do you change pieces? Player above has me confused. Doh, never mind, I've got to learn to read. 2. If a pawn is on, say, H, and goes backwards, does it become a queen when it hits the top of the board?

Hi!
I'm assuming you meant the H square two squares from the bottom? Then no, your pawn cannot go backward and turn into a queen. Loopholes, loopholes everywhere!
