Summer was getting too long for her. All it did was drag. She was active, of course. Some camping here, some vacationing there. Nevertheless, she was still getting sick of it. She missed her friends, even began to miss school, which was something she had never liked.
Until she met him, and the summer nights weren’t preceded by empty summer days. The second she started talking to him made her boredom disappear almost completely, and when they were together in reality, time actually became incapable of going slow enough. She hoped it would drag; but hoping doesn’t slow time down.
They clung to each other, both metaphorically and literally, as the days ticked down like the digits of a bomb. The last few weeks of summer felt almost like hours. It wasn’t love, not yet, but there was a spark neither of them could deny.
Living in separate states, going to different schools, was going to be hard on them. But as the end of the season grew closer and closer, they made a nearly silent promise to see each other as much as what was possible. They became as close as they possibly could, and promised to never let go.
The end of summer might have arrived, but something infinitely better had just begun.
