Summary: Ianto's journey from heartbreak to now.
He'd thought that it would get easier, being apart from her, being alone. But it just didn't really. The nagging in the back of his mind that said he should have been able to save her, that he was a failure, it didn't get quieter. He just let the white noise in his head increase in volume every day. He set about doing all the mindless tasks that fell under his job description or just didn't fall under anyone else's. There were coffees and organizing, cover-ups and scheduling, orders and cleaning, and all the other bits and bobs that no one really wanted to do.
And while he worked, he was okay.
That was why he stayed so late on so many nights now. He needed to do, to take care of, to handle in some way without the mantle of authority, to just stay busy and try to contribute something, anything, even if some of the team thought what he did was next to nothing. He needed to feel like he was needed.
And that was how he came to care for Jack.
