Selene ran on the wall ahead of Esmeralda, tail held erect as she chased after the rat. There was only one squeak when she caught it. "I hope that wasn't someone else's pet, Strawberry," Augustus drawled from his place on the floor of the courtyard. "You know how irritating owners can be when something happens to their little ones."
"Selene doesn't know the difference between a regular rat and a pet," the redhead pointed out as she twisted on the narrow wall, arms out for balance. "No one can hold her to blame for chasing one down when she got hungry. People should take better care of their pets if they can be seen as food."
The blue-haired youth laughed and turned the page of his Divination book. "Be careful that you don't fall, I'm not quick enough to catch you right now."
Esmeralda's dark eyes were cool as she glanced down at him. "I never fall," she informed him. She had been dancing since she was a little girl and one thing that she had always been sure of was her sense of balance. It was the main reason why she had been such a good Keeper for her House team. Not that many of her housemates approved of her current company, or the others that she was likely to see before the day was out. For ones who were supposed to be open-minded the Hufflepuffs could be quite insistent about who was not good company. As though half of them even know proper company, Esmeralda thought as she jumped over Selene. They're not proper company themselves. Augustus's voice distracted her from her silent musings on her housemates.
"Well, look whose come to join us! Pyrite, darling, come and help me with this chart, I think I've placed Jupiter in the wrong spot."
It was the mention of the name - Pyrite - that caused it. Esmeralda's next step was unsure and her ankle twisted, balance broken as she tumbled off the wall. Before she even had a chance to shout her fall was stopped. "T-thank you," Esmeralda murmured as the grinning green-eyed girl let her set her feet down. "I don't know what happened."
"Have to be more careful, Esmi," Medea told her, fingers brushing against the pale girl's cheek as she fixed a stray lock of red hair. The faintest of blushes spread across Esmeralda's cheeks. "We don't want you getting hurt."
Esmeralda took a quick step back when Augustus coughed, turning to glare at the grinning boy. "Here I thought that you never fell," he chortled.
The redhead looked at Medea as the black-haired girl settled in next to Augustus, tilting her head to one side thoughtfully. "I never have before."
