Notes/Warnings: This time I got my request from
xxjinxxx, luckily it goes over better with my muses... sorta... okay, not really. This isn't even what was asked for, just what came from it... proof that my mind's strange.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters, they belong to J.K. Rowling. But quite modified in most cases by their individual writers at Founders or my perception of them.
It was hard for Rose to sit there and listen as Dominique went on and on about her most recent date with Scorpius. Her mood had been much better before her pretty little blonde cousin had flounced back into the Common Room, all but bubbling over with details that Rose really did not need to hear. Or want to, for that matter. That was not why she stayed in her seat as Dominique went on to their other cousins, all of whom seemed far too interested in everything she was saying. Of course they were encouraging, why would they have any reason not to be? Oh right, her. Not that any of them seemed to remember the fact that she had been the first to show any interest in the Ravenclaw Malfoy, or that she had liked him for years, even dated him!, before Dominique caught his attention... granted, she had been the one to tell him to shove off when she caught him staring at the part-Veela one time too many. Still, Dominique could have looked somewhere else. Anywhere else.
But no.
"And then?" Molly was demanding, only half-paying attention with the rest of it focused on some little trinket or other that she had snuck in from Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. Rose did not want to know what it did if it had managed to keep Molly's attention for more than the ten minutes Dominique had been going on. "We haven't got all day, Dom."
"Right," Lilu remarked with a roll of her eyes, "because you've got such important things to be doing."
"I do," Molly said airily. "Besides, she wants to be asked, just look at how she's grinning because I did."
It was true, Rose could see that Dominique's grin had widened when Molly spoke up and there was even a bit of a flush to her cheeks. A flush! Dominique very rarely let a blush go anywhere near her face. But she still looked just as pretty when she did... could she ever just look terrible? Just once? "Zat is not true," Dominique denied. "I just like ze dramatic pause."
"You've had enough of a dramatic pause," Rose snapped, unable to keep her mouth shut. "So get on with it already." It was not that she disliked Dominique, just who she was dating.
Lilu gave Rose a sympathetic look, reaching out to squeeze her shoulder gently. Dominique's eyes narrowed slightly and she sniped something in French before rising and moving rather quickly for the girls dormitories, Victoire not a step behind her. Molly just shook her head and continued toying with her object. "That wasn't very nice, Rosie," Lilu said at last.
Rose flushed, but the anger was not gone from her eyes. "Neither was her going on like that in front of me. She knows-"
"You're the one who broke up with him last year," Lilu reminded her gently. "It's not Dom's fault that you did it or that she likes him."
"Yes it is." If Dominique had not been so pretty, so... whatever else she was that was so appealing, then Scorpius would have never started looking at her in the first place. It would not have led to him talking about, and to, her more than he ever had before. Rose could not stand thinking that perhaps he was more interested in her cousin than in her, but asking him whether he was something else she would not do. Did not think that she should have to do so. It was not her fault that Dominique had been born so beautiful and she had been born with the dark, curly hair of her mother, not to mention the brown eyes... Rose did not see how anyone could think that she compared to any of her cousins, blond or redheaded every one of them. She could have gone about using Granger as a last name and no one would have remarked on it as strange, she looked more like her mother than her father. Once she had thought that was why Scorpius was attracted to her...
Lilu rolled her eyes even as she moved over next to Rose, putting an arm around her shoulders. "You're smarter than that, Rose," she chided, stroking Rose's hair as the other Gryffindor put her head on her shoulder, sniffling a little despite herself. "No one made you do what you did."
"No one made her go out with him either."
"You're really a little to bitter over all this," Molly put in. "He's just a boy."
Rose's eyes narrowed. "Right, because I didn't see you staring at him during the last Quidditch match at all."
Molly did not even look up. "Never said he wasn't a good looking boy. No one's got enough claim on someone that it's not fine to stare."
"If you stare at Aidan-" Lilu began, trying to sound threatening.
"Don't get your knickers in a twist, Lilu." Molly did look up then, a smile on her face. "I'd never try poaching your boy toy."
"Boyfriend."
"Boy toy."
"Boyfriend."
"Boy. Toy."
"Say that one more-"
"Boy toy."
There was a shriek as Lilu took the pillow from Rose's side and threw it at Molly before jumping on her, attempting to tickle the taller girl. Normally Rose would have stayed to see which one came out on top, or whether Molly resorted to turning the red hair purple (though that truly was her favorite thing to do to Lucy) but she was not in the mood tonight. Not saying anything, she stood and left the Common Room entirely.
Rose was wandering through the corridors, not really thinking of where she was going or paying any attention, when she collided with something. "Oh, I'm sorry," she started as she blinked away the stars and stepped back to look up. The rest of the apology died on her lips when she saw who she had run into. "Watch where you're going next time, Malfoy," she snapped, making to step around him.
"Where I'm going?" Scorpius countered, stepping in her way. "You were the one who didn't hear me and was staring down at the floor."
"Then you should have gone around me." Rose went the other way but he countered her, making it impossible for her to get past. She made an exasperated noise. "Are you going to let me pass?"
"Just as soon as you tell me what's got you in such a knot."
"None of your business."
"See, whenever a bird says that it's a sure sign that it probably has to do with you or someone you know." Scorpius had crossed his arms across his chest, an insufferably sure look on his face. Not that Rose was looking at his face, she was glaring at it, something entirely different.
Rose's lips pursed together. That was another thing, he was so damn cocky! It was infuriating even if she did not have to deal with it much anymore. "This bird would rather dance in front of a hungry cat than tell you."
"That could probably be arranged if you'd tell me after... provided the cat didn't eat you."
"Let me through, Malfoy."
"Nope, Weasley, told you what my price was."
Rose hesitated for a moment. "What are you coming this way for anyhow?"
Shrugging, Scorpius shifted a piece of his hair. "I was bringing Dominique her scarf." He held up the flimsy silk thing and fluttered it at her. "She forgot it. Sometimes I think she might forget her head if it weren't attached."
Rose's eyes went flat. There was a flash, a yelp and she continued on her way, leaving Scorpius stomping on the flaming scarf. At least she felt a little better.
