The whisper of curtains being pulled aside woke Augustus. He did not reach for his wand, but simply pulled the covers back and waited for the girl to slip in. He could tell by the scent which one it was, they all had very distinct ones. "Did I forget that you were coming tonight?" he asked, allowing her to curl up with her head on his chest. "Or did something happen that you couldn't possibly wait to tell me about until breakfast?"
"I was lonely," Esmeralda informed him. "Everyone else had someone to be with for the night and I didn't want to be the only one in an empty bed."
Augustus sighed. "My bed's not the one you really want to climb into."
He could not see it, but he was sure that Esmeralda was biting her lip. If Selene had been there - and he would not be the slightest surprised if he woke up in the morning to find the calico curled up somewhere in the room - then she probably would have been using her claws on his comforter from the tension her owner radiated. "Easy for you to say, not so easy to do."
"Now, now, Strawberry, you know better than that," Augustus chided, tapping her on the forehead. "I have just as many troubles as you so do not make light of mine to make yours seem more important." It was not the first time Esmeralda had made that mistake, but it was late and Augustus did not feel like correcting her in his typical way. It would simply count as another strike. Robin was the only one who could get more than three without avoiding him for at least a week.
"You at least know that he'll say-"
Augustus placed a firm finger over Esmeralda's lips. "We can talk about it in the morning when your brain is not so fogged as to make you think that you have a harder lot in life than me. Go to sleep, Strawberry, or I'm going to give you to Dolohov. He needs someone to cheer him up after what happened with his mother."
Esmeralda shuddered and pressed her face into Augustus's nightshirt, shaking her head. "Even if I liked men I would still rather jump out the window," she murmured, earning a laugh from Augustus who was already drifting back off to sleep as she listed reasons why it would be safer to mate with the giant squid than Antonin Dolohov.
"What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing."
"Ooooo, are we 'aving a slumber party?"
"By Merlin, how did all of you get in here?"
"Damn, it looks like Esmi beat all of us."
"She can share."
"I asked a question - how did you all get in here??"
"Aug gave Rosalind the password and I came with 'er."
"I followed them in since they had the password... I didn't want to have to sit out there waiting for some sympathetic snake to let me in... they don't really like me that much."
"I could never understand why. Maybe it's because you glare at Tom every time you so much as see him."
"I'm getting better at that!"
Augustus sighed and sat up again after untangling Esmeralda's hand from his shirt. He glared at the now silent girls surrounding his bed and made a sharp motion with his hand. They all crawled onto the bed as drew the curtains shut. "Falcon, if you ever screech like that in this room again at this hour then you will be unwelcome," he informed the girl who had spoken last. "And the rest of you... did you plan this or are you just trying to give me a headache?"
"I 'ad no idea anyone else was coming," one of the blonde girls declared. "Until I saw Rosalind in the 'allway on the way."
"I had a bad night," Rosalind remarked, pouting slightly.
"I am not your nursemaid, Robin," Augustus said sharply. "Nor yours, Marseille, I need sleep just like everyone else." They all looked down at the bed except for the one he called Marseille, who kept her eyes fixed on him.
The other blonde girl smoothed out her nightgown. "I can go back to my bed, Aug, it seems a little crowded in yours." Her gaze was cool as it lingered on Rosalind. "I don't much care for the current company."
Rosalind opened her mouth to reply but was silenced when Augustus motioned at her. "Be nice, Diamond, or we'll have to have another chat. This isn't the biggest bed but if you all truly feel the need then I'm sure we can find a way to fit. Strawberry, you have to move, I'm not letting Diamond and Robin sleep near each other. Girl sleeps like a log... can't believe your chatter didn't wake her."
"Wake up," Rodolphus said, shaking his twin. "Come on, you have to see this."
Rabastan sat up, glaring at his brother with red-rimmed eyes. "I still have an hour," he informed him. "Go away."
Rodolphus hit him on the shoulder. "No, come on, look at Rook's bed. You'll never guess whose in it."
Rabastan yawned. "Rosalind," he guessed.
"That's one." Rodolphus slid off of his brother's bed and stepped over to stand at the foot of Augustus's, careful to keep his hands away from the calico cat curled up on the trunk. "He's got five girls in there with him!"
"I'll never understand it," Lucius complained, shaking his head. "Why they like sleeping with him, I mean, he's not the most affecionate person in the world."
"He is with them," Cygnus remarked. "Helps them with their hair, their clothes, let's them talk about whatever they want and gives them advice... he's like the perfect boy." He was frowning as he eyed one of the girls on the edge of the bed.
"If I could get them to like me like that then I'd let them share my bed too," Rodolphus said, earning a chuckle from Lucius.
Rabastan shrugged. "Maybe it's because he won't try anything with them."
"That's it precisely," Augustus remarked, grinning from the middle of his bed as he stroked Dominique's hair. "Blokes like me get all the girls... we just don't know what to do with them."
