The sands were cool and gritty against Kairi’s bare feet, and the wetness was as hard to mold as the wood that made up their houses. Pale eyes focused in, and she struggled to adapt her vision as Naminè surged forth with some valuable criticism.
“You need at least one more floor, so you might want to make the base larger.”
Nodding, the redhead extended her arm to lure in more damp sand. It was slow and tenuous work, but the princess of heart knew it was worth the effort. The weak rays of dawn shone down on her dirty clothing and glistening face. It was early summer, but already the humidity of the islands was catching up with her.
“Hey. What’re you doing?”
Jumping with guilt, she swiveled to face her failed guardian, Riku. The blonde sledged along, his body’s heaviness betraying the fact that he must have just emerged from slumber.
“Nothing.” It was shy, but steady.
“Looks like something to me.” Riku didn’t need to tilt to see around her; she was sitting, and all he had to do was re-adjust his eyes and swipe some hair out of the way in order to get a clear view of her work.
Kairi knew when she was defeated, and allowed the air she’d been holding in to swoop out with a body bending sigh. Riku wasn’t like Sora: he wouldn’t pester her about it if she didn’t want to say anything. But he would wonder, and the curiosity might hurt him more than any knowledge could. Uncurling her soiled legs, she slid backwards and out of the way.
“It’s not done yet,” she warned, coral seeping into her face as she examined him.
Shivering eyes shifted like the pufferfish that swam along the island’s shore. “It’s Mickey’s palace,” he murmured, looking from the castle to Kairi, and back again.
“Yeah.” Brown fingers swirled sigils in the sand, her seaweed nail polish barely visible beneath the caked-on filth.
“I know Sora misses his friends, and I was thinking he could go over there later this week, maybe visit Donald and his baby. You know Sora- unless I tell him it’s okay, he’ll never go away on his own.”
“Yeah.” Riku slipped the word out while his shoulders rolled loose. Crystalline blue eyes met her own. “He’ll like that.”
“Yep.”
Body echoing the waves, Riku melted onto the sand beside her. “Need some help?”
The coral on her face deepened as she slid closer to his tired form. “I’ll always need your help, Riku.”
No other words were needed as they built their castle in the sand, hands brushing one another's with the proximity of their feelings.
