Two Volumes of One Book

01. Ring
As a child Dot had always dreamed of having a ring on her finger someday, but the ring was the farthest thing from her mind while she was begging a fading Bob to stay, to marry her.

02. Hero
He was a hero to Enzo, and, on the days she allowed herself to admit that sometimes even she needed a hero, he was one to her as well.

03. Memory
Sometimes the memory of Bob kept Dot going, kept her strong; but other days it made her want to just curl into a ball and sob, and she hated that she couldn't do that.

04. Box
Dot hadn’t been expecting anything for her birthday, so the gift outside her door with "to Dot, from Bob" clumsily scrawled on the tag was a pleasant surprise.

05. Run
When she saw him again she just wanted to run to him, to throw her arms around him like she’d done to her little(?) brother, but she knew she didn’t deserve to after what she’d done.

06. Hurricane
Bob had thought, growing up in the Supercomputer, that he’d seen just about everything there was to see; but when one Dot Matrix came into his life and turned it upside down, he realized how wrong he had been.

07. Wings
On the days when she felt like she couldn’t take any more she wished she could fly away from it all, but she knew that if Bob was still out there somewhere she wanted him to have a home to return to.

08. Cold
There was something rather endearing about a sniffling, sneezing Bob, Dot thought to herself, heating a can of soup on the stovetop as several loud "achoos" followed by a slightly miserable groan came from the next room.

09. Red
He had known she was beautiful even before she shocked everyone with that red gown of hers.

10. Drink
Dot could’ve easily gotten her own energy shake - it was her diner, after all - but why get her own when she could steal some of Bob’s while he wasn’t looking?

11. Midnight
There were nights when he would wake up in the middle of the night just to watch her sleep, still a little awed that they had finally made it.

12. Temptation
Some days, Dot couldn’t understand why the temptation to just lean in and kiss her best friend was so strong, and so she ignored it.

13. View
Bob didn’t think he could ever see anything as beautiful as the newly restored Mainframe sprawled out in all its glory, and then he turned to see Dot Matrix looking up at him.

14. Music
Usually she sang and he played guitar, but occasionally they swapped, and his cringe-worthy singing voice combined with her non-existent guitar skills usually had them collapsed with laughter before long.

15. Silk
It seemed to Bob almost a crime to touch such soft skin with his Web-calloused hands.

16. Cover
"But I have a meeting today, and I can’t be late," Dot protested, as Bob sleepily grabbed her wrist and pulled her back under the covers with him; after a moment she wasn’t protesting anymore.

17. Promise
He’d promised he would never leave her again, but if it meant keeping her safe he would break that promise in an instant - and Bob was usually never one to break promises.

18. Dream
Bob alternately dreaded and looked forward to the times when his watch was over and he could access some downtime; the happiness and longing he felt when he saw her face in his dreams was second only to the pain.

19. Candle
There had been plenty of pretty, intelligent girls at the Academy - Bob had even dated a few - but after he met Dot Matrix he found himself attempting to make comparisons, and not a single one could even hold a candle to her.

20. Talent
Most people knew about Dot’s many talents - her organizing, her planning, her singing - but there were a few talents that only Bob knew about.

21. Silence
They didn’t always need to talk; some of Bob’s best memories were of sitting next to Dot in the diner, watching quietly over her shoulder as she did her work.

22. Journey
The trek back to Mainframe from the Web was long and arduous, full of mistakes and sadness, but he would have made it a million times over because it brought him back to her.

23. Fire
The miniature firewall was the only light in the living room, and Bob and Dot lay cuddled on the couch in front of it, content with each others’ company.

24. Strength
In the minutes after the Twin City was devastated, Dot had to stay strong for her brother; but, when she felt her strength giving out, the young guardian that had found his way to their system from the Supercomputer was a shoulder to lean on.

25. Mask
She wouldn’t cry for Bob in front of her troops; appearing calm and confident was more important.

26. Ice
"You’re not touching me with those feet until they warm up, mister," Dot said sternly from her side of the bed.

27. Fall
Bob rather liked to think of himself as being the hero, the knight in shining armor, the macho one, which is why he was rather embarrassed when he slipped on a puddle of data in the kitchen and Dot was the one to catch him.

28. Forgotten
He felt like he had been punched in the gut when, on one of his seconds spent in the depths of the Web, he realized he couldn’t quite remember what her voice sounded like.

29. Dance
Enzo giggled, amused, as he watched Bob sweep an unsuspecting Dot into his arms and dance goofily around the room with her; Dot’s attempts to protest quickly turned to laughter.

30. Body
I could get used to this, Dot thought, as she curled against Bob’s warm body and listened to his light, even breathing.

31. Sacred
Dot’s office was practically a sacred place, which made Bob feel that a well-placed bucket of data above the door might be an act of sacrilege; he did it anyway, though.

32. Farewells
When he headed into the system core, joking about how it wasn’t "like they would never see each other again," she wanted to punch him, but instead she simply hoped he was right.

33. World
There were hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of systems on the Net, but Mainframe would always be home to Bob because of Dot.

34. Formal
The first time Bob had met Dot she had hit him, then collapsed against him and sobbed, so the formality he was met with after they were reunited stung quite a bit.

35. Fever
When Enzo had a fever Bob was so caring - sponging down his face with a cool cloth, making sure he was comfortable, lugging in the TV from out in the living room so that he would have something to do while he was in bed; Dot put a hand to her slightly swollen belly as she watched him and smiled.

36. Laugh
Bob hadn’t realized Dot was ticklish until he poked her lightly in the side and she jumped; with an evil grin he advanced on her, and within a couple nanos the apartment was filled with shrieks of laughter.

37. Lies
Even when she’d just rolled out of bed, with wild hair, morning breath, and light stubble on her legs, Bob never lied when he told her she was beautiful.

38. Forever
One thing Dot had learned about forever was that it had a way of not being as long as one would hope, and so she tried to never take a moment with Bob for granted.

39. Overwhelmed
The first time he kissed her, it felt like every single one of his senses was firing at once; he thought the feeling would mellow with time, but he came to find that it never really did.

40. Whisper
A well-timed whisper in an ear while lounging on the couch caused the two sprites to forgo using the bed for the night.

41. Wait
Whenever Bob went into a game without Dot, Dot got anxious; she knew he was completely capable of handling games without her - it was part of his function, after all - but she really didn’t like the waiting.

42. Talk
She didn’t realize quite how much she enjoyed talking with Bob until she couldn’t do it anymore.

43. Search
A sopping wet Dot stormed angrily through the apartment, searching every room thoroughly - if Bob was smart he’d keep his distance, because he was going to pay for his "bucket of data over the door" trick.

44. Hope
Even after she had long given up on hoping that he would come home she still had times when she could swear she heard his voice or felt his hand on her shoulder - but there was never anyone there, and she would just feel more alone than before.

45. Eclipse
The thing that made them work so well together was that they complemented each other; their strengths and weaknesses balanced so well that there was never a moment of feeling outdone for either of them - they simply knew what they did best.

46. Gravity
Dot’s heart never felt heavier than it did in the seconds after she realized she had left the sprite she truly loved to die while she nearly married a shadow.

47. Highway
Bob was shocked to find, upon arriving in Mainframe, that the system was so small it didn’t even need a highway; Dot just rolled her eyes at the city boy.

48. Unknown
In the early cycles Bob was the representation of everything she didn’t know but had always wanted to, and as the pain of losing her father and her friends slowly began to subside, she started peppering him with questions about the Net, the Supercomputer, viruses, everything; he was only too happy to answer her questions, because the more they talked the more the spark came back into her eyes.

49. Lock
"That’s it, I’m locking the bathroom door from now on!"

50. Breathe
Even under Daemon’s influence, watching him suffer - watching him flicker and fade as he worked himself to exhaustion - was killing her, and she pleaded silently with him: Keep breathing, please keep breathing....
