{but if you're out there, here's where you belong} | kevin/kibum
Kevin gets the call Wednesday night, impossibly late and he almost ignores it. But he was already awake to begin with; excitement and adrenaline pumping through his veins making it impossible to fall asleep. So he reaches over his bed, slides his hand along the floor until he finds his phone and presses the answer button.
Before he can open his mouth to say hello, the voice on the other line whispers, “Seunghyun?”
Those two syllables immediately cause his heart to start pounding and he finds he is already choking back tears before he is even able to respond. Only one person calls him that. Only one person was ever allowed to call him that.
“Kibummie?” Kevin whispers back, before clearing his throat and saying, a bit louder this time, “Is something wrong?”
“No, noth- I- Why would something be wrong?”
“I don’t know,” Kevin laughs nervously. His expression then turns serious once again as he sits up in his bed, leaning against the headboard with his free hand clenching and unclenching the sheets below him. “I miss you.”
“I know,” Kibum responds and Kevin flinches. He always expects too much from the other boy, always expects his feelings to be recipro- “I miss you too.”
Kevin wants to be strong, doesn’t want to be weak, but those words open the proverbial floodgates and he can’t keep it in anymore. Kevin starts crying at that, unable to stop himself. “I- I can’t- Not anymore- Please,” Kevin babbles hysterically, unaware of what he was even saying and switching back and forth between Korean and his native tongue.
“Shh, Kevin, stop,” Kibum says gently, like he did when Kevin first picked up. He spends a few moments cooing at him over the line until Kevin is calm enough and he says, “I saw you guys on tv today.”
Kevin waits a moment, expecting him to continue. When that seems like all Kibum is going to say, Kevin lets out a tentative, “…And?”
Kibum takes a breath, Kevin can hear it over the phone, and says, “Amazing. Honestly.”
Kevin’s fingers start shaking where he is gripping on to his sheets.
“You’re all doing great, you’ve grown so much,” Kibum continues. As if realizing how cheesy he was being, he adds jokingly, “Don’t forget me when you win first place, okay?”
Kevin squeezes his eyes shut, almost picturing Kibum smiling and laughing in front of him, and breathes out, “Never.”
“Good. I jus- Good.” Kibum’s voice comes out shaky as well, and Kevin almost goes to comment on it when he hears another voice in the background, calling for Kibum.
“Kevinnie, I have to go now,” Kibum says and Kevin struggles to choke back a sob while making sure Kibum doesn’t hear. He does, of course, and he swallows his pride in order to comfort Kevin, whispering an “I love you” over the line.
Kevin finally lets go off the sheet and instead puts his hand over his heart, feels the blood rushing under his fingertips and says, “I love you, too.”
The is a brief pause, a million things running through Kevin’s head that he almost verbalizes, but then the line goes dead. Kevin stares at his phone blankly for a few minutes then quickly dials a familiar number, the hand still pressed against his heart now gripping his shirt. Kevin waits for the other person to pick up and knows he won’t be getting any sleep tonight.
{the good ones go if you wait too long} | kevin/kiseop
the first time it snowed during the cold winter months as they promoted in korea, the members could barely contain their glee. dongho and kevin were bouncing in their seats in the van of course, but even the older and calmer members were smiling to themselves. they had intended to go practice for a little bit after their schedules, but the managers had a discussion amongst themselves and decided they could give the boys the afternoon off. they weren't cold-hearted, and admittedly they were also excited to play in the snow.
they found a park close to the company's building and immediately each member set off to their preferred snow activities. aj helped dongho begin rolling snow in order to make a snowman, which really meant that dongho watched and ordered him around as aj-and eventually hwaseok-did the manual labor. not too far away, soohyun and eli, along with the other two managers, moonsung and taeyoun, were having an intense snowball fight. they had split into two teams, 2shin (moonsung and soohyun) and wonkim (taeyoun and eli) and were using all the brute strength they collectively possessed in order to, at least attempt to, pummel the other team. hoon was the only one who hadn't run screaming into the park, instead choosing to walk slowly, kicking up snow and watching it sparkle in the air.
kiseop stayed behind at the van, carefully unpacking his camera from his bag and began snapping shots of his fellow members. he stayed at a distance, not wanting to get his camera wet, but made sure to get lots of pictures nonetheless. as he scanned the park, he noticed kevin was missing and it was only when hoon started speaking seemingly to the ground that he realized kevin was lying in the snow.
the boy had a thick winter coat and hat to protect him from the snow, but his jeans were completed soaked from the back as kevin moved his arms and legs in order to make a snow angel.
kiseop watched how the snow glimmered around the angel shape kevin made, how kevin's cheeks flushed a soft shade of pink, how there was a sparkle in his eyes that kiseop hadn't seen in a long time. kiseop raised his camera to take a picture, but paused, wondering if kevin would even show up in the photo or if-like an ethereal creature not meant for this earth-there would simply be a blank space where he belonged.
kiseop decided not to take the risk, instead putting his camera back in the van and, ignoring the cries for help from eli (kiseop glanced over and saw soohyun sitting on eli's back as he shoved snow down the younger boy's shirt, eli screaming "hyung! hyung, stop! it's cold!" in both english, korean and japanese.) he joined kevin and hoon where they were chatting, kevin still laying on the ground and hoon standing above him.
that night, kevin invites himself to kiseop's house and kiseop helps him strip out of his soaked clothes, sending kevin to the shower while he gathered clothes for him and made hot chocolate. when kevin comes out of the shower, kiseop passes him the clothes with a blush, trying to ignore how all of kevin's bare skin is flushed a light pink-like his face had been when they were outside.
kiseop bundles him and kevin in blankets, putting on the tv but muting it, and they flip through the pictures in his camera. kiseop watches kevin and tries to pretend that nothing is changing, and kevin stares at the camera and tries to pretend he doesn't notice that there are no pictures of him.
{i wonder where we'd end up if we could start again} | eli/kevin
the ride back to their dorm was silent, kevin staring out the window and refusing to look over at eli. eli tried to make conversation, offering a quiet "we did well today, didn't we?" that was met with only silence. eli sighed, slumping down in his seat more. he glanced over at kevin, the younger boy resolutely ignoring his stare though he could feel it sending warmth through his face and body.
"are you hungry?" eli tried again, but once again got no response. he was tempted to just ignore the boy's antics but he saw the glance in the rearview mirror their manager gave him, knowing that if he didn't fix this then they'd both be in for a lecture about band morale.
eli shifts closer to kevin, resting a hand on kevin's knee and starting to speak. he doesn't get to say anything before kevin shoves his hand off muttering, "don't touch me. not after you-"
kevin cuts himself off, but suddenly eli knows what this was about.
when they had finished their short performance with jamosa, the three of them had congregated backstage and congratulated each other, thanking the staff as well. eli had been particularly proud of his rap in the song, both versions, and was nothing but smiles and hugs as he sweeped through the dressing room to thank everyone. when he got to jamosa, he had sweeped the tiny girl in his arms, lifting her and spinning her around. she giggled sweetly and they exchanged words of praise and grins. when it came time for them to part, jamosa had hugged kevin and whispered something to him, and when she got to eli she simply gave him a kiss on the cheek and slipped out of the room.
eli had thought nothing of it at the time, but now he realizes how it must have looked to kevin.
he sighs once again and wraps kevin in a hug against his will, saying, "you're ridiculous. you know i'm not interested in her."
"really?" kevin replies bitterly. "could have fooled me."
kevin struggles against eli's hold but eli doesn't budge, instead nuzzling into kevin's neck and whining, "keviiiiiiiiiiin."
his affection caused kevin to stop struggling, but a frown was still marring his pretty face and eli felt like a royal asshole for hurting him.
"kevin, c'mon. we've talked about this," he insists. "please don't make it out to be more than it is."
eli sounds almost pitiful as he tries to explain himself and kevin starts to feel bad too. his angry expression drops as he runs a hand through his hair. "i know, i know. i'm just stressed."
kevin sighs despondently and eli pulls him closer, "we all are, kevin. it's okay."
"last time we were in japan… and then we went back… and the dorm…" kevin starts rambling and eli shushes him with a quick peck. kevin finally relaxes completely at that, his body going lax in eli's arms.
"it'll be fine," eli reassures. "it'll be easier than last time, okay? i'll make sure we room together." at that, eli spares a glance back up at their manager but he's purposely ignoring them in the back and eli is thankful that their staff, the managers in particular, care about them enough to not interfere or report them to the company.
"okay," is all kevin says in reply and he closes his eyes, signaling the end of the conversation. eli shifts the two of them into a more comfortable position, running his fingers through kevin's hair as the boy finally reaches a state of relaxation that eli hadn't seen in weeks. he already loathes the idea of having to wake kevin up when they arrive at their dorm, but the ride takes longer and has more turns than he remembers. if eli notices their manager giving them more time to relax, he doesn't say a word.
