But scumble DOES make sense. It's stupid, I'll admit, but the imagery of a very thin layer of paint over an existing painting gives an overlapping hue to the pre-existing painting. If it's blue, the bottom painting will look bluish. So while the skin hasn't been painted, the scruff of the hairs that are just poking up are giving the illusion of tinting the skin a different color (I pictured dark gray). Of course, I didn't know the meaning of the word, and I'll bet he didn't either until he looked it up in his trusty thesaurus, but I use one when I write and if a word sounds neat I'll plug it in, assuming it fits. I'd probably like that imagery more if I had known in advance what scumble meant.

Exactly what I was thinking - how can a beard be impending? Is it not actually there yet but announcing itself with scruff/5'oclock shadow?
