Something else that's been bothering me

Which I've debated posting, but what the hell, it's my journal. And this isn't directed at anyone in particular, rather it's directed at a good portion of our entire generation ( Read more... )

Good post! I have to vote by absentee ballot, which is scary because I feel like my vote won't count.

It would probably be a better nation if we paid attention to OTHER elections, too, but I know I'm guilty of not knowing who the people running for other offices are. At least I am informed and voting for the BIG one.

I voted by absentee ballot in the 2004 presidential election and in the midterm election. But in the midterm election, my vote actually wasn't counted. A few weeks after the election, I got something in the mail saying they didn't count it because it didn't reach them in time, which pissed me off, because I thought I mailed it far enough ahead of time.

And yeah, as a nation we don't pay enough attention to the other elections or even the other nominees and issues on the presidential ballot, but at least the presidential election is a start, you know? If you won't even concern yourself to vote for the person who runs your country, that's not a good sign, I feel.

Great post. People are so stuck on their own problems anymore. I know several people who don't plan to vote. They prattle on about how they have work and school and homework and activities and they have no time to sit and research the internet about all these policies. One coworker even told me it was better to leave the voting to the smart people, because she watched the debates and didn't understand much of it and the candidates websites were so vague. People want stuff broken down for them anymore, they don't want to do extra learning to figure out what the politicians are talking about.

I feel like it's worse in Oregon though because everything is done by mail and there are no voter registration cards. People lose ballots, don't know if they are registered, the mail gets delivered to a neighbor, etc. People tend to care less if it's not convenient for them or if there aren't specific instructions like go here on X day and vote. That's just another sad fact about the population though.

I don't know, I kind of thought the politics were pretty broken down, I mean that's why we do have a two party system because they pretty much take the same general stand on general issues. It's like politics for dummies. Or maybe that's just my perception, I don't know.

That sucks about the mail, though. That sounds really inconvenient. I had to vote by absentee ballot through the mail a couple of times and it was a huge pain. I even had to get it notarized. I like my little polling place, though. There are old people who wear red, white, and blue hats and other patriotic paraphanalia and they give us cookies.

Some yes and some no. I could easily follow the health care and education stuff. When it came to some of the foreign stuff and energy, I felt a little lost. I hate not being able to vote in person! We had the old people too and it was fun voting back in 04. This year it's just get ballot, mail ballot, the end. I never have stamps and I completely fail at mailing stuff because our apartment complex box was closed due to someone putting a cherrybomb in there. So now I'm gonna have to look up a post office and go way out of my way to vote. There are so many anti government and independent party people out here though, they probably want it that way.
