No way, write what you want. Better to write what interests you, write it well, get a good grade, than to write what you think he wants, write poorly 'cause you're just not into it, and then get a bad grade.

Writing's subjective anyway. You've got the tools, and your mechanics are good. If he gives you a bad grade because he doesn't like the subject matter then he needs to find a new job.

Fantasy and science-fiction not serious? I think I just heard the ghosts of Asimov and Tolkein wailing and cursing.
