My first reaction on reading this was "Damn! Somebody beat me to it." I tried to post a short-short with exactly the same scenario and theme yesterday but it didn't get picked up. Honest, I'm not a copy cat. I really did write mine before I read yours.
OK, I'm over myself now.
I really like what you did with the narrative blending into the song that blends back into the narrative. I read below that you don't think it worked, and maybe you could smooth the transition a little, but I like it.
The concept of Mal finding some kind of healing is very necessary to bring closure to the Firefly/Serenity story line. River is the natural person to help him find it for many reasons: she can read his mind and knows what's going on in there (poor kid) and it doesn't seem to bother him; she and Mal have a unique rapport, even if he does occasionally wonder "Should I worry that what she said makes perfect sense to me?"*; her "crazy" status lets her say things that no one else could get away with ( ... )

Just read all of them. I actually like how they're linkin' together somewhat.. nice stay in character.

Just annoying to have to keep going back to that damn page!
