[toku] Kamen Rider OOO overall review

Aug 28, 2011 21:15

So, Kamen Rider OOO ended this morning. Suffice to say, I don't really feel anything towards what happened to Ankh. In fact, although this SA reviewer's notes were pretty positive about the final episode, one repetitive bit stood out to me quite starkly and it pretty much summed up the series for me.

Bold = emphasis mine.

So OOOs is over. Subs aren't up yet but I really enjoyed the ending. It's a very closed circle which makes me wonder how they plan to inevitably milk this particular series, and I get the feeling others might not like it...but I enjoyed it, and this series a whole lot.

Oh well, next up is SPACE.

Finale highlights

Eiji finally connects with the Tatoba Finisher.. It does nothing.

Eiji duel-wields the Medajalibur and the Medagabryu (I hate these names by the way)

Eiji drops Cake Boss's entire Scrooge McDuck Cell Medal Bin into the Medagabryu axe.. It does nothing.

Ankh gives all three of his last Core Medals to Eiji, including his cracked one. Eiji dumps all of his Purple Medals into the Tajaspinner and kills Maki. Maki breaks apart, sucks the Uva-Pyramid into a black hole with the remaining medals, except for the cracked and broken Ankh one.

Ankh is supposedly dead but the series ends with Eiji wandering the desert with the two halves of Ankh's medal, and the ghost of Ankh's hand following behind.

To me, Eiji really did nothing in the entire series. Maybe I'm not being fair considering that I barely paid any attention to the latter half (mostly after the Shocker filler) but it really felt that Eiji had very little impact on the series. I don't know if it's the writing or just that the actors weren't really into the show, because I mean, I'm okay with Miura's acting but what I noticed in my toku conversations is that what I usually comment on is how hot Miura is, and never about Ankh. I mean, Miura is hot, and yet it....didn't make for compelling television. I could honestly be less bothered about what happened to Ankh.

Which is why I'm not really torn that Ankh disappeared or had an epiphany that he didn't want to die or anything because I am just so bored by the show. I didn't find the characters likable and while I enjoyed the bromance between Date and Gotou, one of the annoying points I felt about the Birth team is that they seriously suck at fighting! One is an ex-cop and the other is known as the Fighting Doctor, why are you guys having so much trouble fighting off mooks?!

I think the only people I really cared about in the series is Uva and Gameru, and the Birth bromance when they're not sucking. Kougami was appropriately entertaining and Satonaka-san is hot, but that's not enough to carry a season.

So, to me, it's pretty much goodbye OOO, and, uh...hello Fourze? I'm not sure if I'll react well to Fourze, it doesn't really seem to be my cup of tea, but I'll give anything a try. At any rate, I could be losing interest in tokusatsu and maybe this may mean I'm moving on to other things, but we'll see.

tokusatsu, kamen rider ooo
