SKYWARD SWORD III (SPOILERS)

Apr 04, 2012 10:17

And unto the next part of our quest! This is going to be a bit long, since I've actually beaten all the temples, SPOILER met up with Zelda SPOILER, and now I'm halfway through the Song of the Hero quest. I'm only going up through the SPOILER part, though, else this would take way too long.

THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO START WITH, THOUGH:

"Am I the only one who feels he comes across as something of a smartass? And kind of mean. You can actually make him really mean in this game, now that I think about it." I know! Isn't it great? I found it so funny and refreshing after years of silent, stoic Link.

Ah man, I love your reviews so much. Please don't make me wait too long until the next one.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm actually not a big fan of silent protagonist, as I've never been one who can "put myself in their shoes." (Part of that may be due to the distinct lack of female characters in gaming, now that I think about it, but it's not the whole of the issue.) I have to develop an emotional connection to the character or narrative in order to care about what's going on, and that generally requires the protagonist having a personality separate from my own. I use the difference between Dead Space and Dead Space 2 as a prime example - the first game was scary, but I was a lot more frightened by the second one because Isaac was more than just an empty vessel to me. Suddenly, I didn't want to just beat the game, I wanted to be less shit at the controls so I could keep Isaac alive. Thus, I will be absolutely thrilled when Link becomes his own person. SUCH AN ANGRY MAN IS ANGRY.

I can't remember for the life of me the backstory of aLttP (MIND LIKE A SIEVE), but I'm going to say the creators may have given themselves an out by making the older games part of that new "failure" timeline. It makes it possible to suggest that the real history has been destroyed in the years following Hyrule's decline.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think you could legitimately argue a case where the story has been lost or rewritten. Fi comments on the dire inaccuracy of the prophecy Gaebora reveals at the beginning of the game, so they've already established that there is historical degradation across the series.

...

I still want to know what happened to the "Magical Sword." :D
