The problem comes when other people start thinking that because you're against gun control, it must mean you want to use those guns to shoot gays and abortion clinic employees.
It's easy to lump all your enemies into one category. That way you don't have to consider their differences as individuals, but can simply vilify them as a group. See "terrorist" "conservative" and "liberal".

I would probably vote for John McCain. He's moderate enough that I don't worry he'll spazz out and shift too far right and honorable enough that I respect him even when I disagree with him. Plus, I kind of like having a President from the opposing party as Congress, as I think it decreases the liklihood of half-assed extremist crusades of either variety.
Really it just sounds like you're a libertarian at heart who embraces economic conservativism while rejecting the dogma-spewing demagogue constituency of the Republican party.
