Having just read on samanthadelayed's LJ a few days ago the lists of books that people have requested to be banned, I shouldn't be surprised at this, but somehow I am. Like you, one of my thoughts was, when did "The Wide Sargasso Sea" become a children's book?

I am reminded of seeing "South Pacific" for the first time when I was about 10 and being utterly shocked and distraught when one of the two leading men (the younger, good-looking one) was killed. I kept saying to my mother, but they can't kill him, he was the hero! My mother explained gently that sometimes those kinds of things happened. (I just realised that that must have been practise for watching Joss's shows!)

? for the mother-- "Did it e'er occur to her that maybe her kids are getting darker because of hitting puberty?" Oi vey! Somewhere, a village is missing its idiot... well, maybe not exactly missing...

I'm really disgusted that she suggested A) Burning books and B) Doing it on Guy Fawkes Night. Does sshe e'en understand the concept of Irony?! *Sending lots of negative thoughts for her to enjoy.... grumble*

Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick, what the hell is wrong with the world. Out of all the possible things you could crusade on, She choose books that tell it like it really is. People like this I really don't have time for. Shouldn't she be happy that her kids want to read in the first place. Don't even get me started on burning perfectly good books...
