My problem with Counterspell is that it created a new style of play: denial. Matches where nothing gets done. Blue/white control decks taking 30 minutes to do nothing, slowly grinding you down 1 life at time. Swing for 2? A red letter day, the game moved twice as fast for a half second!. It's the mindset that it created that is the problem, not the card.
The problem is that one person isn't playing. The guy with the U/W control deck sits there and doesn't do ANYTHING except counter spells and wait for some ridiculous bomb card to win. The other guy wastes his time playing a game in which he has no role. The other guy serves only as a foil for the controller to showcase his awesomeness at denial and not letting someone else play.
