On June 28th 1898, a couple months into the Spanish-American war, the US sent a gunship, the U.S.S. Charleston, to capture Guam. I tried to include tidbits like this all the time when I was teaching World History. For example, this conversation occurred when we were talking about the French Revolution:

Me: So from yesterday, what can you tell me about Napoleon?
Student: (very enthusiastically) He was short, itchy, and afraid of cats!
Me: (trying hard not to laugh) What else?
Student: Oh, and he was trying to take over Europe.
