Unfortunately, you're right - TLA did well in the box-office, despite the fact that it was horrible. I still say to this day that the only reason why it did so well was because the people who went to see it were in it for the lulz or had a drinking game.

If Dragonball Evolution came out in 1997, it would have also made a ton of money because back then everyone was a pre-teen. But since they waited so long, everyone who is now a DB fan is in their early 20's-late 30's, so you can't pass the same bullcrap against them.
Us on the other hand, and I hate to say this, are made up of pre-teen people with a huge amount of them being female. We are like the anti-Twilight fans but we still overall had the same sensibilities in terms of squee, even the males. I know I'm one of them! The squeeing part not the pre-teen or Twilight part. =P
That is why I was NOT surprised at all that most of the predominate Racebending members were 17+ in age.

TLA wasn't a total flop but it certainly wasn't a success either. You gave HP as an example and it's a great one for comparison. Hell, even stuff like the Transformers movies did better (and yes, they are making a 3rd Transformer movie). POTC4 just wrapped and there are already rumors of a 5th and 6th movie. These are more guaranteed franchises that will be greenlit.
It doesn't necessarily mean they won't do a TLA sequel but it's definitely a more risky endeavor for them and if they do a sequel it will not happen right away.
