so...can we go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief?

I'm making this post to ask the community if there's any way as of right now we can determine whether or not Shyamalan's promise of future TLA sequels is now moot or not.  Last I heard they were going to announce it at the end of the fall, but that didn't come.  According to www.lastairbenderfans.com/, TLA has grossed 315 million, which seems like ( Read more... )

Wasn't Rob Paulsen the voice of Fat, Piandao's manservant? If he wasn't, then it was a sound-alike, I swear.

Unfortunately, you're right - TLA did well in the box-office, despite the fact that it was horrible. I still say to this day that the only reason why it did so well was because the people who went to see it were in it for the lulz or had a drinking game.

And oh, Mila, why.

Why didn't they sneak in?! There were other movies playing...

I honestly thought that that was the PLAN. Didn't we all swear that if we were tempted, we would pay for something better and sneak in?!

Actually sadly, I think it has to do with that our fan base is young and thus is still very naive.

If Dragonball Evolution came out in 1997, it would have also made a ton of money because back then everyone was a pre-teen. But since they waited so long, everyone who is now a DB fan is in their early 20's-late 30's, so you can't pass the same bullcrap against them.

Us on the other hand, and I hate to say this, are made up of pre-teen people with a huge amount of them being female. We are like the anti-Twilight fans but we still overall had the same sensibilities in terms of squee, even the males. I know I'm one of them! The squeeing part not the pre-teen or Twilight part. =P

That is why I was NOT surprised at all that most of the predominate Racebending members were 17+ in age.

it's worth noting that the DOMESTIC gross is still only $130M, and i've been told domestic gross is all that really matters in determining sequelhood or not, to say nothing of the fact that even with a domestic gross like that, the studio is only getting about half of that, so they still fell way short of breaking even, to say nothing of the profit they expected from what they were touting as a tent-pole movie. by the time shyamalan finishes his current projects, assuming he doesn't take on any more, noah ringer will already be considerably older, as well as nicola peltz ( ... )

Yeah, I've heard the same thing: that they care more about the domestic gross on movies, and that it's by the domestic gross that they judge whether a movie has been successful. Not that they're not happy to have the worldwide gross and the DVD sales, etc. But I've heard that the domestic gross is key, and this didn't even make back it's budget with the domestic gross.

TLA wasn't a total flop but it certainly wasn't a success either. You gave HP as an example and it's a great one for comparison. Hell, even stuff like the Transformers movies did better (and yes, they are making a 3rd Transformer movie). POTC4 just wrapped and there are already rumors of a 5th and 6th movie. These are more guaranteed franchises that will be greenlit.

It doesn't necessarily mean they won't do a TLA sequel but it's definitely a more risky endeavor for them and if they do a sequel it will not happen right away.

I know fans of the movie are insisting that Paramount are waiting to see how well it's selling on DVD, but honestly, if they haven't announced a sequel by now, it's very unlikely that we'll see one, especially since there are growing child actors to consider as well.
