I was wandering through the book store with my brother the other day when we noticed a book by a Fox news analyst about the "war on Christmas." I hadn't been aware that there was any such war, although apparently the recent Christmas tree incident in the Seattle-Tacoma Airport was just one in a long line of carefully constructed attacks on the ( Read more... )

Separation of church and state? leahfelicity December 23 2006, 20:29:07 UTC
In other attacks-on-Christianity news, I hear that the Christians are attempting to make it so the new Muslim senator cannot be sworn in on a Koran. They want people to be legally only sworn on on Bibles. Good for them... or... something...

I heard about that. As I told my mother, I don't understand the logic there at all. I would rather someone swear a pledge on the holy book that has meaning to them than one which does not. I mean, wouldn't an oath on the Koran seemingly be more morally binding for a Muslim than an oath on the Bible? Isn't that the point of the exercise?

The point is, and always has been, our pal Jesus. And don't you dare ever think anything otherwise. Or let your children think anything otherwise. And judge everyone who tries anything different.

Actually, there is no Bible or any holy book involved in swearing in a Representative. All they do is say an oath/affirmation of office.

"I, (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

They say that oath with the right hand raised. Some hold a Bible for a photo-op after the ceremony, but it's not actually any official part of what happens on the floor of the house.

Sometimes I wish these talkshow kooks would actually try reading the Constitution.
