Today is the 1,352nd anniversary of the Battle of Winwæd, considered by historians to mark the demise of the indigenous Anglo-Saxon religion. It was on this day when the last of England's great Pagan kings, Penda of Mercia, died in battle. Tírfæst Penda--I made sure to remember him too. And we should learn from his mistakes, such as not objecting when missionaries converted his sons. But I hope he's in Wælheall. He was a good 'un.
