Oriental's an antiquated word for easten, much like occidental is an antiquted word for western. Apparently orientation at one time meant to face one's house east. I'm not exactly sure what making the house face east would do, but whatever.

Next time you have some sort of orientation, ask the person leading it which way east is, and then sit facing that way. That's what I'm gonna do.

Facing the house east would face it in the direction of the sun rise, which is handy for waking up in the morning.
