Kiss Hand Diamonds Best Friend

The missus put Moulin Rouge on because it cheers her up. Far be it from me to comment on how odd it is that she finds this tragic love-story cheering, but I must agree it is one of the best movies evah. I am singularly indebted to pax_draconis for introducing me (and by extension, the missus) to it. Ranks with South Park - Bigger, Longer, Uncut as my favourite ( Read more... )

Jim Broadbent breaking out into 'Like a Virgin' is a moment that I remember laughing at until I had trouble breathing. The sheer balls of the director to pull off something like that and make it work still makes me grin.

Btw Andy have you seen Amile? It has a similar use of colour to Moulin Rouge in that it's very impressionist in places and is just generally a lovely film.

Everything from Kylie with the voice of Ozzy as the Green Fairy right through to her falling from the trapeze via Smells Like Teen Spirit is pure hallucinogenic dynamite. It's the absinthe trip, and "straight to the elephant" culminating in Heroes and Children of the Revolution is the gentle comedown that sets up the second, darker act.

It is a tragedy - Hindi Sad Diamonds marking the tragic, magnificent nadir - but I find that if you watch the credits all the way to the end, even the title music is designed to bring you back up out of the depths and leave you on the other side as the red curtain closes.

Baz Luhrmann is one of the five best directors in the world. I wish he had made more films. I would watch him reading from a telephone book.

Didn't he release that as a single at one point?

Hero is another film which makes good, though slightly less subtle, use of colour.

I would go out on a limb and suggest The Matrix as another; it should be borne in mind that 'good use' doesn't necessarily mean 'bold and uninhibited'.

Finally 'Charlie's Angels' also does pretty well. Music video director McG knows well how to frame and light each shot for best use of visual cues.

Hero - yes, of course. It's easy to get caught up in the complex storytelling and forget the colouring. The Matrix is an interesting one, but then the first movie is fairly interesting anyway, although I prefer Kung Fu Hustle - a movie that is simultaneously entirely different yet, in my head, directly comparable to the Matrix.

As to Charlies' Angels ... I'm running a few scenes through my head and I can see what you mean. The "choreopgraphy" of "Cool Baraccuda" (?) in particular sticks in the mind, as does Drew Barrymore jumping out the window.

Kung Fu Hustle rocks.

I like smart films.
Dumb films mostly annoy me.
