People kill me with "You can do that anytime." Line when it comes to cons

Anyone will tell you that almost any experience with a friend or partner is enhanced when it's in person. Especially those in long distance relationships will attest to that. Even with using the internet with skype, online play with a game or video chat. It will never be the

Oh hell no! There's nothing like good physical contact or being face-to-face with someone. The one's who usually say that online is better are the ones that never get out and experience real life.

I can attest this is indeed true, as I have never had some much fun with another person playing a video game as I have when I am actively making fun of them for it. Much less taking the little directional pen and touching it to the DS screen going "I like this, this, this, hate this, this, this, what does this switch on the side of it do?"

No, see... You can do that anytime, but having a con to do it at makes sure you actually sit your butt down (or get off your butt, or whatever is applicable) and do it.

I think for me the biggest difference is when I'm talking on Skype I don't get things done. I can work and talk in person, but when I get on Skype it's as though my brain flips the "but I have X person now and won't for very long" switch, even on days when I know I'm likely going to be exhausted and begging off to sleep before anything else becomes an issue.

So you're still planning on getting your Elf to Mega-Epic level while at the con?

hehe, I'm not going against what you're saying but I've seen people get together with people they haven't seen in forever and then... sit in front of a computer. Being in person with someone is always better than broken by distance, but there are levels within that experience and how you use your time together. I wouldn't say I say I see my old friends from my hometown often (sometimes once a month, sometimes every four months or so) but I almost regret the experience when it's spent in front of the television or a video game - if I know I could have spent the day doing something and instead, although I enjoy their company, it's spent doing easily forgettable time wasting things. I spent years with them doing that, sure it can be fun once in awhile but look back on your memories - what stands out? Once more in front of the tube or doing something out of the norm, going outside, being active ( ... )

He's got a very real and wholesome point. Treasure your time with others, not involving a blinking screen.
