You can't have an ounce of geeky blood and not love this picture.

Anyone want to start taking bets on how this will end the world?  Will it create gazillions of nanoscale black holes that will accumulate at the earth's core and begin eating it?  Or will strange quarks it generates take over our very nuclei, converting the whole planet and everything ( Read more... )

I remember reading that article. Of course, I tend to agree with Hawking, although I'd frame it more like the weak anthropic principle: if the universe were the kind of place where crazy things could happen, there's no way the earth could've lasted the 4 billion years necessary for us to evolve. Interestingly, this is very similar to the core premise of my philosophy of depressing realism.
