I decided that I'll review "El Orfanato" because it deserves to be reviewed for being an awesome movie like Pan's Labyrinth (which I should really review..it's too good)! Spoilers ahoy. Oh, and it's a simple review..nothing like Ebert and Roeper's. Just. Plain. Simple!
The Orphanage is about a family (mother, Laura, husband, Carlos, and son, Simon) who move into an old home. Originally, it was an orphanage that Laura used to live in before she became adopted. She wanted to relive those days by turning her home into a place where she can take care of disabled children just as the orphanage took care of her. But strange things begin to happen after her son goes missing. It's about her painful struggle to stop at nothing to find her son and how the orphanage held a dark secret..
Much like the American remake of Dark Water, The Orphanage is a sad tale with startling scenes and disturbing imagery that wins at creeping you out for a little. Belén Rueda did an outstanding performance as Laura, who goes through so much pain to find her son. I figured it'd be a great movie seeing as how its producer is the same dude who directed Pan's Labyrinth, and guess what, I WAS RIGHT. There was a lot of creepy scenes in the movie. My favorite being the Red Light-Green Light game with the ghost children. Tomas was pretty fecking creepy too..with his sack mask.
The ending is pretty sad and ironic. It was a nice twist though.
Freaking kids and their sack masks..
Nothing awesome like critics, but it gets to the point.
Fucking watch it.
And don't complain because you have to read the subtitles. Learn Spanish, or something if it's that hard.
PEACE~
