Heroes v. Dollhouse

Hi there!

I'm watching Heroes now, I just saw the latest episode of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse.

When I'd heard that Joss was doing a new series, I thought: "WooHoo! BuffAngeFly II!!". I was sincerely hoping for another great series with amazing plot twists and turns and awesome characterization. Well, at least until the inevitable puppet Read more... )

I have hopes that there's more to this than a series about human sex-trafficking

Hmm. That actual makes the series sound interesting.

There's an undercurrent of ... what's that called again? Oh yes, HALFWAY DECENT WRITING.

OK. We need to find you some new television.

Dexter's good. The Wire (if you haven't already), Big Love, The Tudors, Breaking Bad, Generation Kill, Cathouse (though it's "Reality TV"). Burn Notice is entertaining, but *I* wouldn't call it great. Comedy: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Reno 911.

I'll assume you've seen Deadwood.

I've watched Dollhouse from the first episode. It is an amazing vehicle for Eliza Dushku, so many opportunities for interesting character acting. The morality of the Dollhouse concept is continually questioned in the show and I particularly liked the last episode with the "man on the street" interviews. And the plot twists are a bit of fun. So, yeah, it has problems but it is smartly written and is holding my attention.

Hi there!

The last episode really did it for me. The way that the fight in the alleyway ended, and the answering machine message thing really had me gobsmacked.

(being deliberately vague to avoid spoilers for anyone else reading this. Which is a lot more than I'll do for Heroes anymore)

I have a theory about the way that Season 2 or 3 are going to go, but I don't want to spoil anything BEFORE it's actually a spoiler. I know, it technically wouldn't be a spoiler at all, because I could be wrong, but I'm keeping it to myself for now, unless you ask nicely. :)

Heh, good point about spoilers. The answering machine thing was no surprise. After the Russian after all. The alley fight, yeah, that was a twist.

Hi there!

The Russian thing? Um ... I remember the thing with the Russian mob guy who set up FBI dude, but nothing else with an answering machine before now. Have I been totally asleep??

But yeah, it's been a really great series so far. :)

I stopped watching Heros midway thru 2nd season.

Dollhouse has taken some predictable turns but overall, I'm digging it. I don't have a problem watching a show with a premise about human sex trafficking. I think there's a lot of shows out there that have questionable premises, but with good writing it fades away into the scenery. Doesn't mean we condone the premise. Some examples I can think of are Sopranos, Big Love, Weeds.

Hi there!

Oh no, we certainly don't condone group marriage or selling marijuana in the suburbs ... nopenopenopenope. ;)

(and yes, I don't condone the latter-day saints' version of group marriage, but that's different)

I really should watch Big Love and Weeds. I saw the first season of BL, but when we moved, we stopped getting HBO. :(

I was going to suggest Big Love. When Bill got shoved into that white van, I almost lost my shit.

Not Micah's Aunt! She is a clone. But she met Micah at the end of season two at his mom's funeral.

The fact that I know that disturbs me.

I dunno. I'm still enjoying the heck out of Heroes for some reason (but I totally agree with you on Hiro's power) and I never got past the pilot of Dollhouse.
